It’s no brainteaser: Giants punter angles to silence Eagles’ DJax

25 09 2011

By Marc Sessler NFL.com

This year’s Giants punter doesn’t plan to commit the same sin last year’s did.

We’re all familiar with Matt Dodge‘s ill-fated punt against the Eagles last December, which DeSean Jackson returned 65 yards for the game-winning score as time ran out, effectively ending New York’s season.

This time around, Steve Weatherford is in, Dodge is out. For the new guy, punting away from Jackson in Sunday’s meeting rests atop the priority list.

“We’re going to do our best to put the ball on the sidelines or out of bounds and limit the room that he has to work with,” Weatherford told the New York Daily News. “Ideally, I’d like to have the ball out of bounds — obviously that’s what (Tom) Coughlin’s looking for.”

Weatherford also wants to make it clear that a punter’s job — especially angling punts away from predatory return-men — is more strenuous than you’d think.

“It’s not like a Madden video game, where you point the arrow and push ‘X,’” Weatherford said. “There’s some skill involved in it.”

Of course, of course.

Weatherford’s job on Sunday is crystal clear — keep the punting game out of the headlines and Jackson out of the end zone. Anything less, and — well — just ask Matt Dodge.

Eagles Super Bowl Drive Begins With Rout Of Rams

12 09 2011

by R.B. Fall Strom – Associated Press

ST. LOUIS – The lockout didn’t bother Michael Vick. It simply left him with fresh legs for the season opener.

The Eagles quarterback was in dazzling form and the other Philly game-breakers were hard to catch, too, as the team opened its self-proclaimed Super Bowl drive with a 31-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

“It felt great to know that I can go out and play lights out, not have to worry about anything,” Vick said. “I feel better than I’ve ever felt before and I give a lot of credit with the situation with the CBA, giving us a lot time to get rest and to prepare ourselves. Can’t run from Philadelphia Eagles defense deficiencies

19 08 2011

By Rich Hofmann – Daily News Sports Columnist

For as long as most of us can remember, the Eagles’ defense has been about speed, not size. The organization has read the league-wide trends and always preferred the faster guy over the bigger guy. If that meant people ran on them, so be it.

It was that way when Jim Johnson was the defensive coordinator, and when Sean McDermott was the defensive coordinator, and it is that way now with Juan Castillo as the defensive coordinator, only more so.

But have they reached the tipping point?

To be weak at the point of attack is one thing and to be totally deficient is something completely different. The Eagles are teetering right on that knife edge this summer. To live with a defense that gives up a lot of running yards is one thing and to be run over by a truck every week is another matter entirely.

Last night, it was the truck.

It makes you wonder.

A runaway semi, painted black with gold trim, splattered the Eagles’ defense all over the turf at Heinz Field last night: 14 carries and 71 yards for the Steelers’ first-team offense in the game’s first two drives. In a game that the Eagles were losing by 21-0 at halftime and 24-14 at the end – a game of unlimited lousiness for the Dream Team – this physical domination stood out most of all. Eagles Receiver Jeremy Maclin Had Cancer Scare

17 08 2011

Jay Glazer – Fox Sports Exclusive

The Philadelphia Eagles have gotten major national attention for all their recent player additions. But a noticeable subtraction from the team’s workouts has had people searching for answers — until now.

Eagles starting wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who had missed camp because of what the media had been calling a “mysterious illness,” revealed to FOXSports.com on Wednesday that he has been struggling with a cancer scare.

Maclin told FOXSports.com in an exclusive interview that a false test led doctors to believe he had contracted a form of cancer known as lymphoma.

But after further testing, Maclin was given a clean bill of health and is ready to return to the field.

“That’s first and foremost, I want everyone to know I’m fine, I’m healthy,” Maclin told FOXSports.com on Wednesday, only an hour after receiving word from his doctor that his final test came back negative. “I was tested for everything, and every single test came back negative. I don’t have mono, I don’t have AIDS, leukemia — all the things people were guessing on, there was nothing. I was being tested for lymphoma and thank God everything has come back negative. Brother Says Maclin Is Fine

17 08 2011

by Steve Greenberg of Sporting News

Jeremy Maclin’s “mysterious illness” will be more clearly defined Tuesday, according to an older brother of the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver.

“When I say definitely, we definitely will have some news tomorrow,” Andre Maclin told Sporting News.

“That’s when we find out exactly what’s going on and when (the Maclin camp) will address it and talk.”

Maclin, a third-year player who broke out in 2010 with nearly 1,000 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns, has yet to practice with the Eagles this summer and last week left for his hometown, St. Louis, to be further evaluated by doctors due to an undisclosed illness.

Considering his offseason bout with mononucleosis, during which Maclin reportedly lost at least 15 pounds, this current illness has raised significant concern among Eagles fans. There has been speculation online and

on sports-talk radio in Philadelphia that Maclin’s career — and his long-term health — may be in jeopardy.

No so, said Andre Maclin: “They kind of have us on a gag order until tomorrow. … But he’s fine, he’s fine. That much I can say.”

Asked if he expects Maclin to play for the Eagles this season, the brother said, “I’m confident about that as well.”

Attempts to reach the Eagles early Monday were unsuccessful. Representatives for Maclin declined comment.

Eagles: Mike Patterson Back On Field After Suffering Seizue

13 08 2011

By Reuben Frank and Andy Schwartz at csnphilly.comMike Pattterson Philadelphia Eagles

A welcome sight for the Eagles: defensive tackle Mike Patterson is in uniform and doing drills on a side field at training camp.

Patterson has not practiced since Aug. 3, when he was hospitalized after suffering a seizure during drills. Patterson was diagnosed with a brain AVM, which most likely caused the seizure, and has been undergoing tests.

Elsewhere, DeSean Jackson, who ended his holdout last Monday, is practicing for the first time this camp.

Short at offensive tackle, the Eagles signed a pair Saturday morning: undrafted rookie Spencer Johnson and veteran Joe Toledo.

A teammate of third-round pick Curtis Marsh’s at Utah State, Johnson started 39 of 46 games in four seasons with the Aggies. He is wearing No. 72. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Ryan Harris The Right Choice To Protect Vick’s Blind Side

4 08 2011

by Les Bowen on Philly.comRyan Harris Michael Vick Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles left guard Todd Herremans was asked what he knows about Ryan Harris.

“Big kid,” Herremans offered after Harris watched the Eagles’ afternoon walkthrough from the sideline. “Played for Denver, right? He’s here now . . . What number was he wearing, 64? He was wearing No. 64. Jersey was green.”

Like most of the players the Eagles have added during camp, Harris has no name on the back of his jersey yet, and no clear idea exactly how he fits into the work in progress being assembled on the practice fields of Lehigh.

We can probably say that Harris, who signed as a free agent Tuesday, fits in ahead of King Dunlap and Austin Howard on the depth chart at right offensive tackle. Ahead of Winston Justice, when Justice is fully recovered from offseason knee surgery? Unclear, especially with coach Andy Reid indicating yesterday that Justice’s rehab might not have been handled pefectly during the lockout, when he was away from the Birds’ medical staff. Philadelphia Eagles: DeSean Jackson Ending Holdout

2 08 2011

by Ryan Wilson on cbssports.comDeSean Jackson of the Philadelphia Eagles

DeSean Jackson hinted at a holdout last week but now, according to 6ABC in Philadelphia, the Eagles wide receiver will report to training camp at Lehigh University, either Monday or Tuesday.

The team’s second-round pick in the 2008 draft has become one of the most dynamic players in the league during this three-year career, and Jackson wants a contract that reflects that. He’s in the final year of his rookie deal, one that will pay him $565,000 in 2011. Still, the organization has no interest in talking to Jackson about a new deal until he reports to camp.

Eagles president Joe Banner, appearing on the 610 WIP Radio Morning Show Monday, didn’t mince words. Read the rest of this entry »

Vince Young Calls Philadelphia Eagles a Dream Team

1 08 2011

by Tim McMannus on phillysportsdaily.com

When asked to describe the players that have been brought in and the group that is being assembled, Vince Young cracked a wide smile and simply responded: “Dream Team.”

“From Nnamdi [Asomugha] to [Dominique Rodgers-] Cromartie, to Jason [Babin] to myself,“ Young continued, “I know they are going to do some more things…It’s just beautiful to see where we’re trying to go.”

The desired destination, of course, is Indianapolis, to stake claim to the first Super Bowl championship in the team’s history. General manager Howie Roseman noted that the goal remains the same each season, but there is no mistaking the sense of immediacy surrounding the organization in this moment.

President Joe Banner spoke as part of a parade to the podium Saturday that included Babin, Young and Rodgers-Cromartie (Asomugha’s turn will likely come Sunday), and was asked about Young’s description of the team he was putting together. Read the rest of this entry »

Noel Devine Quit On Philadelphia Eagles

1 08 2011

by Aaron Wilson of Scout.com

Undrafted rookie running back Noel Devine was abruptly released Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced.

What they didn’t announce is that the former West Virginia star actually left the squad on his own, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.

It’s unclear exactly why Devine left the Eagles, but the diminutive runner could have been frustrated with his practice snaps since Philadelphia has plenty of backs.

Undersized at 5-foot-7, 179 pounds, Devine struggled with a toe injury last season and rushed for 934 yards and six touchdowns as a senior. Read the rest of this entry »
