Kevin Kolb Finally Dealt To Cardinals

28 07 2011

from FoxSports

Arguably the lockout’s biggest hostage finally found what he was looking for all along: a starting quarterback job.

The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to trade backup QB Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for starting cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft pick, NFL.com reported Thursday.

In addition to dealing away their one-time Pro Bowl CB Cromartie and a coveted draft pick, the Cardinals extended Kolb’s current contract for five more years and $63 million ($21 million guaranteed).

The move comes as little surprise as Kolb, who lost his starting job to Michael Vick last season, had regularly stated his desire to play for a team that would allow him to start. Read the rest of this entry »

DeSean Jackson Officially A Holdout

28 07 2011

by Jeff Mclane on Philly.com

DeSean Jackson was not at the Eagles’ first training camp practice Thursday morning at Lehigh University, a team source said.

Jackson can now officially be labeled a holdout.

This morning’s practice — a walk-through — is closed to the media and fans. But as expected the Eagles’ star wide receiver was not in uniform even though he is contractually obligated to be in attendance. Jackson didn’t arrive at Lehigh like almost all of the Eagles on Wednesday, but he was given a grace period because of the NFL lockout.

Jackson’s reason for holding out is no secret, although neither he nor his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have publicly stated the reason. He wants a new contract. Jackson is entering the last year of the four-year deal he signed as a second-round draft pick in 2008. He is slated to earn $560,000 in base salary this season.

Rosenhaus did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowl player, is underpaid compared to other similarly-talented receivers and the Eagles are likely to want to extend him at some point. But holding out against the Eagles doesn’t usually end well.

We’ll see how long Jackson stays away from Lehigh, but he will be fined $30,000 for each day that he misses.

Also, as expected, quarterback Kevin Kolb did not report to Lehigh. He is currently the centerpiece of trade discussions between the Eagles and Cardinals so it is uncertain if the Eagles have excused his absence.

The Eagles and Cards have made “significant progress” toward reaching an agreement that would send Kevin Kolb to the Cards and Pro Bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and additional compensation in the form of a draft pick to the Eagles, according to a league source familiar with negotiations.

The source said that as of Wednesday evening, the deal was not done. Read the rest of this entry »

Arizona Cardinals: Kyle Orton plan B to Philadelphia Eagle’s Kevin Kolb

6 05 2011

by 3TV Sports / Natalie Rivers

PHOENIX – It’s time to play guess who’ll be the Cardinals quarterback next season and according to a source they have a new contestant.

The Channel 3 sports department has learned that the Cardinals have had preliminary contact with the Broncos about the availability of Kyle Orton.

A source tells 3TV’s Tim Ring, the discussions would not be categorized as serious but the Broncos believe the Cardinals have an interest in Orton as a “Plan B” if they can’t work out a deal for Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Orton has thrown 71 touchdown passes in a five-year career in Denver and Chicago.

Philadelphia Eagles Draft Needs

14 04 2011

We’ve all read and heard the windfall of reports on how the current NFL owner’s lockout has rendered free agency dead, and how teams with new coaches looking to put players in position or start working with pieces in place are hamstrung and rendered unable to do anything having to do with the game of football.

The Philadelphia Eagles are no different. Unlike teams like the San Francisco 49ers, who have a new coach in place trying to figure out who is going to lead his team at the quarterback position and beginning the work of that person learning a system, the Eagles have QBs to spare. Heading into the draft, the Eagles will be very interested in whether Nelson (at least temporarily pending appeal) lifts the lockout, allowing the Eagles to hopefully jump on the phones and have the myriad of teams pining for backup Kevin Kolb start the bidding. That would make the 2011 NFL Draft on April 28 wholly different for the Birds. Read the rest of this entry »

Eagles Sign Michael Vick To One Year Pact

2 03 2011

2010 Comeback Player of the year, Michael Vick, has signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.  Vick who was given the franchise tag on February 15th, signed the tender on Wednesday.

Under rules of the current collective bargaining agreement which expires at midnight tonight, a team must pay a franchise player the average of the top five salaries at his position.  That current value is approximately $20 million.

Vick had his most successful season as a professional in 2010, earning a starting spot in the Pro Bowl and leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 10-6 record and NFC East Championship in a season where many thought they would struggle to reach .500.   In week 1, Vick replaced an injured Kevin Kolb.  He set career highs in yards passing (3,018), touchdowns passing (21), touchdowns rushing (9), completion percentage (62.6) and passer rating (100.2).

DeSean Jackson Talks Eagles Needs

28 01 2011

Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson, coming off consecutive 1000 yard seasons, suffered a bone bruise and grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee during the Philadelphia Eagles’ round one playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers and as a result will not risk further injury by playing in the Pro Bowl. He says his knee has not completely healed.

Jackson claims that had the team made the Super Bowl that he would have played and didn’t stop there. He stated that he “wants a Super Bowl” and discussed some of the things the Eagles need to do in order to get there. While discussing the Eagles vacant defensive coordinator position, Jackson stated “in order to win a championship, we need our defense to kind of step up and just help out.” In regards to the offensive side of the ball, Jackson said “We could get a little bit stronger on the offensive line, because we had a couple of guys get hurt. If we can kind of do that and protect Michael Vick, the sky’s the limit.”

Jackson stated a need for “more playmakers” on defense, including another shut down cornerback to play opposite Asante Samuel. Just because Jackson will not play in the Pro Bowl this week, does not mean he is not working. Jackson has been recruiting Oakland Raiders free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. “I talked to Nnamdi,” Jackson said. “I said, ‘Man, come on, Nnamdi, we need you to come sign with us,’ because if we had him and Asante, oh, my God. That’s very dangerous.”

In regards to the quarterback situation, DeSean said he isn’t privy to any inside information but has little doubt that Michael Vick will be back as the Eagles’ starter in 2011 and that backup Kevin Kolb will be dealt.

Adam Caplan Talks Philadelphia Eagles

13 01 2011

In yesterday’s live chat with Adam Caplan of FoxSports, Adam addressed several interesting points regarding the Philadelphia Eagles.

  • Adam reiterated that last year he felt that both Kolb and Vick would be on the team while McNabb would not.  His prediction for this year is that if Vick returns, Kolb will be traded.  He feels there will be a strong market for Kolb based on his age, upside, and the desperate need for a quarterback that several teams face.  Caplan feels that the Eagles will either get a future first round pick and additional considerations or a first round pick in this year’s draft.  Possible destinations suggested include Cardinals, 49ers, Titans, Vikings, Seahawks.
  • Asked possible destinations for Nnamdi Asomugha, Caplan opined that the Eagles would be a sensible fit seeing as they play more man defense than most teams and that they would like to press opposing wide receivers more.  PCP TAKE:  Asomugha is at the top of my off-season wish list for the Birds.  He is a shutdown corner and the team is incredibly weak at the position beyond Asante Samuel.
  • When asked what the Eagles offseason needs were, Caplan cited many; right guard, strong-side linebacker, weak-side linebacker, defensive end, cornerback, and strong safety.
  • Caplan does not feel that resigning Quintin Mikell is a priority currently but that it should be.

Eagles To Miss Postseason?

19 06 2010

According to Mike Florio in a recent column for thesportingnews.com, the Philadelphia Eagles are one of six teams that reached the playoffs last season but will not return during the 2010 campaign. Florio believes that the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints will also fall short.

Florio sites the fact that it will be Kevin Kolb’s first year, question marks on the offensive line, a defense that regressed under new defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, and a tough division as reasons he believes the Birds will have a tough time making into the final field of 12.

Philadelphia Eagles Persiflage

9 03 2010
  • Former Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback AJ Feeley signed a deal with the St. Louis Rams for $6 million over two years, a nice haul for a journeyman backup who struggled mightily in Miami when given a chance to be a starter.  The Rams offensive coordinator is Pat Shurmur, who coached Feeley in Philadelphia.  The Rams have also been the team linked to most actively pursuing Donovan McNabb.
  • The team released Wil Witherspoon, acquired just five months ago in a trade with the St. Louis Rams for Brandon Gibson and a fifth round selection.  Witherspoon’s base salary for 2010 was $5 million dollars and certainly played no small role in the Eagles decision. Nonetheless, the trade has to be considered a failure.
  • As Andy Reid continues to insist that “Donovan’s our quarterback,” there are rumblings that there is some major infighting going on in the Eagles front office and that both GM Howie Roseman and team President Joe Banner would like to see what Kevin Kolb can do.
  • Despite the fact that the Eagles have a glaring need for a defensive end to play opposite superstar Trent Cole, the team allowed both Julius Peppers and Aaron Kampman, the top two defensive ends on the free agent market, to sign elsewhere.  Peppers signed with Chicago, while Kampman went to Jacksonville.  Kampman was scheduled to visit with the Eagles but canceled his visit and signed with the Jags later that same day.
  • Michael Vick is due to earn a $1.5 million roster bonus at 4:00 p.m. ET today and the Eagles, unhappy with all trade offers currently on the table, are set to pay it.
  • Former Philadelphia Eagle Lito Sheppard is looking for a job.  Lito was due a $10 million dollar roster bonus.  That coupled with the fact that the team has just acquired Antonio Cromartie from the San Diego Chargers, spelled the end for Sheppard’s days in The Big Apple.  The Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears are, according to Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com, interested in his services.
  • Jason Avant signed a five-year, $18 million deal with the team, $8 million of which is guaranteed.  Even more amazing is the fact that Avant will pocket $7 million of that money in 2010.  Avant caught 41 passes for 587 yards and three touchdowns last year as the Eagles primary slot receiver.  He’s a solid route runner with good hands and is a guy that QB Donovan McNabb looks to often on 3rd and short (before bouncing the ball at his feet and grinning like an idiot on his way back to the sidelines).
  • The Philadelphia Eagles have traded receiver Reggie Brown to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 6th round pick in the 2010 NFL draft.  Finally.
