Rollins Inks Three Year Deal To Stay With Philadelphia Phillies

18 12 2011

by Scott Miller

Jimmy Rollins, the heart of the Philadelphia Phillies for the past several seasons, will continue to provide the pulse: He is returning to Jimmy Rollins resigns with Philadelphia PhilliesPhiladelphia on a three-year, $33 million deal, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.

The contract includes a vesting option for a fourth year that is described by one source as easily obtainable that likely will make the entire package worth $44 million.

The Rollins-Phillies deal has been a foregone conclusion in the industry for much of the winter, though the Milwaukee Brewers did inquire and show some interest in prying him away from Philadelphia early. However, once they signed Alex Gonzalez, and with St. Louis re-signing Rafael Furcal last week, there were few teams left looking for shortstops.

Which works well for both the Phillies and Rollins, because given perhaps the best run in Philadelphia baseball history over these past five seasons, the shortstop is back where he belongs.

Though the Phillies have seen some decline since Rollins’ sensational 2007 NL MVP season, they also watched him produce a solid bounce-back season in 2011 after he played in only 88 games in 2010 during a season in which a nagging calf injury limited his production.

In 142 games last season, Rollins batted .268/.338/.399 with 16 homers, 63 RBIs and 30 stolen bases.

That’s a far better fit for a Philadelphia team primed for another run at the World Series behind Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and the gang than, say, Freddy Galvis or Wilson Valdez would have been.

At 33 and still in terrific shape, Rollins should be able to play shortstop adequately through the duration of this contract. And despite Chase Utley‘s injury-checkered past couple of seasons, Rollins and Utley still give the Phillies a very solid — and often potent — middle infield.

With Rollins done, Philadelphia’s biggest issue heading into 2012 will be at first base, as Ryan Howard‘s continues his recovery from the torn left Achilles tendon he suffered on the final play in the Phillies’ final game last October against the Cardinals.

Howard is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season, given his original diagnosis of a five- to six-month recovery process. The Phillies this winter have traded for Ty Wigginton and signed free agent Jim Thome, and each is expected to help patch the void at first until Howard returns.

Philadelphia Phillies Post Free Agent Outlook Following Ty Wigginton Acquisition

21 11 2011

by Jim Salisbury of Comcast Sportsnet

The Phillies continued to change the look of their bench by acquiring versatile Ty Wigginton from the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later or cash on Sunday.

Wigginton, 34, bats right-handed and plays infield and outfield. He joins Jim Thome as additions to the bench this off-season.

“I like three things about him,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “I like his makeup. I like that he fits our club in that he can play first base and third base. And I like that he gives us another guy with power off the bench. We had been looking to add depth to our bench.” Read the rest of this entry »

Roy Halladay: More Trade Implications

24 07 2009

Despite the fact that Roy Halladay would immediately make the Phillies a more dangerous team than they already are in the National League, there are some drawbacks.  The drawbacks are few and somewhat inconsequential, but they exist none the less. First, the Phillies would not only be adding approximately 20 million in salary commitments in the next 15 months, they are also subtracting cheap players as well.  Here is a list of all contracts and obligations for 2010 courtesy of mlbcontracts.com.  Read the rest of this entry »

Superstar Benchings: The Right Approach?

29 06 2009

by Michael DeLuca

Jimmy Rollins is not the only star player mired in a slump who’s been riding the pine lately. Yankees 3B Alex rollinRodriguez was also recently relegated to the bench for a brief time as well. Both teams’ claim the players need rest, some time to fend off mental fatigue.

Rollins, hitting just .211, will be back in the lineup and leading off on Tuesday “unless something really changes between now and then” according to Phils’ skipper Charlie Manuel. ESPN’s Eric Young believes that giving these players time off was the smart move, saying that slumping players tend to press and try too hard to break out of the slump. He concludes that because they are stars they would press even harder because they know what they are capable of. Young does go on to say though that the similarities end there for each players difficulties. A-Rod is believed to have returned too early from offseason hip surgery and also experienced a tumultuousAlex-Rodriguez offseason. Rollins, conversely, has simply not been fundamentally sound at the plate. Compounding the problem, is that Rollins has begun to have mental lapses in the field as well.

Whether or not benching these players is the right approach is certainly up for debate. Rodriguez seems to be in favor of the rest and acknowledges that he may have rushed back too soon. In Rollins’ case, he has always seemed to respond following any form of discipline or inactivity. For Phillies fans, let’s hope he does tonight.

PHILLIES AREN’T THAT FAR AWAY

WORLD SERIES HANGOVER OR BROKEN MACHINE?

phillies1by John Leon

Pundits, radio talk show hosts, ESPN and God knows who else, are wondering what’s wrong with the Phillies this season. The problems have been numerous and before we even get into what is wrong and possible fixes, let’s remind ourselves of one thing.

They’re STILL in first place as of June 26th! Not by much but still….

THE PROBLEMS

First and foremost are the injuries and although every team, at one time or another goes through it, not one team will publicly make excuses for them. Now you and I know that, in private, the thinking is, “Boy, if this guy or that guy hadn’t gotten hurt….” Well, history will show that teams that stay healthy usually win or at least make a run at a championship. Last year was a case in point. Yes, they lost Chase Utley, Cole Hamels, etc. for short periods of time, but this year is a different animal. The laundry list is long and takes a major toll on the reserves. Hamels (twice), Brett Myers, Scott Eyre, Brad Lidge, Raul Ibanez, Carlos Ruiz, Clay Condrey. Add in the suspension of J.C. Romero and M.A.S.H looks tame compared to them. Antonio Bastardo went down last night and that didn’t look good at all. The bullpen has been taxed, the troubles of Jamie Moyer and the inconsistency of Hamels adds up to disaster if they don’t get it straightened out. Read the rest of this entry »

J-Rolled From Lineup

25 06 2009

by Michael DeLuca

Jimmy Rollins is being benched for “a couple of days” according to Phils’ skipper Charlie Manuel.  This on the heels of a BASEBALL/five-game hitless streak and a horrendous error in judgement last night when Rollins attempted a two out toss to second base instead of firing to first for the easy out.  The runner was safe and a close game quickly became out of reach.

Rollins has suffered through slumps in the past but one thing Phils’ fans could always count on was stellar defense.  Not so in the past several weeks, as Rollins has fumbled several times recently on what, for him, are usually routine plays.  Many are calling Rollins’ difficulties mental lapses and cite a lack of motivation.  Is this temporary trip to the pine a punishment or simply a chance for J-Roll to clear his head?

An Early Holliday Season for the Phils ?

Could Holliday be landing in Philly ?

Could Holliday be landing in Philly ?

By Mike Gill

Could Christmas be coming early to Philadelphia this season?

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Phillies could be looking to spread some off-season cheer a little early to their fans by adding Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday.

The next question here is what would it take to get Holliday from the Rockies. The question this off-season will now be are Phillies fans willing to mortgage the future for another World Series, or now that they have one, be more patience with the pieces they already have instead of jumping at the chance to have a one-year rental like Holliday.

With the said, lets start with Carlos Carrasco. He is still a high prospect for the Phillies, but will he pitch at the big league level in 2009? Not at the start of the season, so would you be willing to send him to Colorado with say J.A. Happ in exchange for a guy who will probably bolt after 2009 – I wouldn’t. Will the Phillies Deal Rollins?

5 11 2008
Could Rowand and Rollins be re-united again ?

Could Rowand and Rollins be re-united again ?

By Mike Gill

Would the Phillies deal Jimmy Rollins?

According to a story by Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News , the Phillies could listen to offers for Rollins.  And why shouldn’t they ?

The former MVP did not have a good year and the Phillies could decide to strike while the iron is hot.  While I think Jimmy still has a good season or so left him in, another MVP season will never happen.  What the Phillies would miss most from Rollins is his gold glove defense.  Even when his bat is cold and his strikeouts are high, his play at shortstop is unquestionably the best in the league.

So does this rumor make any sense ? Read the rest of this entry »
