McNabb To Rams Deal Is Close

25 03 2010

Donovan McNabbPhiladelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid confirmed yesterday that the team is entertaining offers for quarterback Donovan McNabb.

The latest rumor has McNabb headed to the St. Louis Rams in exchange for the #33 overall pick in the draft and FS OJ Atogwe according to beat writer Jeff McLane.  According to McLane’s sources, McNabb is willing to go St. Louis if he can reach a contract extension with the team.

Adding credence to the report are recent comments from Andy Reid regarding the new draft format in which only the first round occurs on day one.  ”I’d love to have that first pick of the second day,” Reid said, referring to the 33d overall pick. “Where you can sleep on it, regather your thoughts, which you normally don’t get to do.”

A league source said that it was “not yet completed,” in reference to whether or not a deal was in fact on the table between the Rams and Eagles.  The comment leads one to believe that not only is a deal on the table but that it is close to being consummated.  Rams G.M. Billy Devaney, however, went on record and called the report “utterly false” and “absolutely ridiculousl!”

If this transaction were to go down, McNabb would be reunited with Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, his former quarterbacks coach with the Eagles and St. Louis head coach Steve Spagnuolo who was a defensive coach (secondary, linebackers) for the Birds.

PCPTAKE:  In my opinion, late first round and early second round picks are the most valuable selections in the draft, considering the obscene amount of money that goes to the unproven players at the top of round 1.  As Reid intimated, the 33rd pick holds even more value, since you’re essentially on the clock overnight.  This gives you the ability to not only consider your own pick but evaluate trade offers to move out of the pick for a much longer period of time.  Throw in OJ Atogwe, one of the leagues top free safeties (and a need position for the Eagles) and this deal makes a lot of sense.

UPDATE:  In a recent segment of PFTV, Mike Florio made two very strong statements regarding the McNabb situation.

#1  He know believes that it is inevitable that McNabb will be traded.

#2  He believes that the Eagles fabricated the Rams trade scenario in order to drum up some trade offers from other clubs.

Philadelphia Eagles Persiflage

9 03 2010
  • Former Philadelphia Eagles backup quarterback AJ Feeley signed a deal with the St. Louis Rams for $6 million over two years, a nice haul for a journeyman backup who struggled mightily in Miami when given a chance to be a starter.  The Rams offensive coordinator is Pat Shurmur, who coached Feeley in Philadelphia.  The Rams have also been the team linked to most actively pursuing Donovan McNabb.
  • The team released Wil Witherspoon, acquired just five months ago in a trade with the St. Louis Rams for Brandon Gibson and a fifth round selection.  Witherspoon’s base salary for 2010 was $5 million dollars and certainly played no small role in the Eagles decision. Nonetheless, the trade has to be considered a failure.
  • As Andy Reid continues to insist that “Donovan’s our quarterback,” there are rumblings that there is some major infighting going on in the Eagles front office and that both GM Howie Roseman and team President Joe Banner would like to see what Kevin Kolb can do.
  • Despite the fact that the Eagles have a glaring need for a defensive end to play opposite superstar Trent Cole, the team allowed both Julius Peppers and Aaron Kampman, the top two defensive ends on the free agent market, to sign elsewhere.  Peppers signed with Chicago, while Kampman went to Jacksonville.  Kampman was scheduled to visit with the Eagles but canceled his visit and signed with the Jags later that same day.
  • Michael Vick is due to earn a $1.5 million roster bonus at 4:00 p.m. ET today and the Eagles, unhappy with all trade offers currently on the table, are set to pay it.
  • Former Philadelphia Eagle Lito Sheppard is looking for a job.  Lito was due a $10 million dollar roster bonus.  That coupled with the fact that the team has just acquired Antonio Cromartie from the San Diego Chargers, spelled the end for Sheppard’s days in The Big Apple.  The Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears are, according to Mike Florio of profootballtalk.com, interested in his services.
  • Jason Avant signed a five-year, $18 million deal with the team, $8 million of which is guaranteed.  Even more amazing is the fact that Avant will pocket $7 million of that money in 2010.  Avant caught 41 passes for 587 yards and three touchdowns last year as the Eagles primary slot receiver.  He’s a solid route runner with good hands and is a guy that QB Donovan McNabb looks to often on 3rd and short (before bouncing the ball at his feet and grinning like an idiot on his way back to the sidelines).
  • The Philadelphia Eagles have traded receiver Reggie Brown to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 6th round pick in the 2010 NFL draft.  Finally.

McNabb Endorses Garcia Signing

15 09 2009

Donvan McNabb is once again saying all the right thing as the Eagles continue to load up on quarterbacks that the Philadelphia fans will clamor for as his ouster. Through his Yardbarker blog, Mcnabb said “It’s too early to tell whether I might be able to play this week due to my rib injury. Sunday is a long way away. I will work with the trainers to do my best to be ready. Like the rest of the team, I have confidence that Kevin will do well if called upon. Adding Jeff Garcia to the roster is a great idea. He knows our offense and how we do things around here. He’s a great teammate and I look forward to working with him again.”

In the case of Michael Vick, though I highly doubt it, I could be persuaded to entertain the thought that #5 was on board. This time, re-signing Jeff Garcia, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s a at best discontented…at worst, infuriated.

Eagles: Quick Hits

19 08 2009

by Michael DeLuca

Shawn Andrews flew to Los Angeles to have his back examined by renowned surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins. Watkins found no structural damage, saying the injury was just muscle related. Eagles head coach Andy Reid said there is no indication yet when Andrews will return to the team. “We really have to go off symptoms and what he’s feeling,” Reid said. Sounds to me like he’s “feeling” allergic to training camp and those symptoms will cease once it ends. Shouldn’t surprise anyone, he’s bitched and moaned about training camps since arriving in Philly. Adam Caplan says via twitter (I refuse to write twits…or tweets….or twats), “Good news on S. Andrews injury. Looks like he’ll do some limited work soon. Still, 50-50 to be ready for week one.”

Brent Celek is back from his shoulder sprain and is expected to participate in Thursday’s preseason game. Great new for the Birds but they should be keeping their eyes open for backup/replacement TE’s that shake loose as other team’s make their pre-season cuts.

Why do the names Tony Ugoh and Zach Miller always pop into my head when Kevin Kolb’s name is mentioned? Oh yeah, because they’re the two names (that stuck out to me) that were still on the board when the Eagles shocked the football world by drafting Donovan McNabb’s “heir apparent”. The best we could get in exchange for Kolb now, maybe Tony Scheffler and a 4th rounder…which would probably be a good deal for both sides.

McNabb Wants Burress Too!

17 08 2009

Mike Florio of nyg_plaxico_burress_01profootballtalk.com is reporting that Donovan McNabb said during a Monday press conference that he has suggested pursuing receiver Plaxico Burress. “I don’t think it would hurt,” said McNabb. When recently asked a hypothetical of whether he would lobby for a guy like Plaxico Burress, McNabb quipped, “I did. … I brought T.O. here.”

All of this has come about after the signing of Michael Vick, which it is now being reported was initiated by a pitch from McNabb to Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid. Said Reid to SI’s Peter King,  “This all started with Donovan. And when the other leaders of the team saw Donovan embracing him and embracing the idea here the last couple of days, they followed him, and they embraced Michael too. They brought him into the family.” King says that McNabb text messaged Andy Reid on July 26th after commissioner Roger Goodell announced Vick’s reinstatement plans.  The message, “Sign him.”  Reid’s response, “You’re killing me!” But as we all now know, Vick is an Eagle and maybe McNabb can be persuasive enough to convince the Birds’ brass that Burress would be a wise investment as well.  When discussing the parallels between Vick and Burress, McNabb had this to say, “I have a relationship with Plaxico, as well. When you’ve been in this league for a while, you build relationships. And you want to see guys get an opportunity to continue on.”

More hurdles exist with a Burress signing than with Vick, who had already served a two year prison sentence. Burress, no doubt, will face a league suspension and may go to trial on felony weapons possession prior to season’s end.

McNabb Discusses Wildcat

17 08 2009

When asked about his thoughts on the Wildcat offense, Donovan McNabb has some interesting and maddeningly contradictory things to mcnabbsay. “The Wildcat offense worked in college,” he said. “It was something that came out last year with some teams starting to do it, but I don’t think it will last that long. I think people look at the Wildcat as a copout,” he said. “(Vick’s) a quarterback. He’s not a utility guy. He’s not a receiver. He’s not a running back. Too many times people focus in on numbers instead of what we’re focusing on, to win the ballgame. Whenever the guy was on the team and they lined up and he had the ball in his hands, they had the best chance of winning. Andmichael_vick that’s what you want to do to great players.”  McNabb then completely reversed course by discussing the possibilities of both he and Vick on the field at the same time, “If I get to move to receiver for a play and he steps in and back there with Westbrook and McCoy, now you’re adding another dimension that the defensive coordinators, it provides a problem for because you don’t know who to stop. Then you throw in a little DeSean out there as well and then me at the receiver position, I mean you’re talking about some highly skilled guys out there.”

Eagles O-Line Needs to Gel

27 07 2009

By Mike Gill

The Andrews brothers will be key to the Eagles success in 2009.

The Andrews brothers will be key to the Eagles success in 2009.

With Eagles veterans scheduled to report to camp on Wednesday, one of the main areas of cocern for me on the offensive side of the ball is how quickly will the offensive gel.  The birds added pro-bowl tackle Jason Peters from Buffalo and guard Stacey Andrews to a line that at times struggled to protect Donovan McNabb and consistently create running room for Brian Westbrook.

This season, with bigger, more athletic tackles, could the Eagles be primed to run the ball more?  Probably not, but it should be interesting to see how well the guards play with the new tackles.  Especially on the right side where the Andrews brothers have flipped positions.

On the left side, the Eagles have added Peters, who will be paired with incumbent guard Todd Herramans.  Herramans is one of the smaller guys on the line at 6-6 320 pounds.  How will he pair up with Peters and will the Eagles be able to run the ball to the left side when they need that third and one, late in the fourth quarter.

To look deeper into the offensive line, and more on the Eagles, we talked to former Eagles offensive linemen and Super Bowl champion, Barrett Brooks on the Sports Bash, on 97.3 ESPN FM.

Kolb Trade Speculation

17 06 2009

by Michael DeLuca

Chris Wesseling of Rotoworld.com has speculated on the possibility that, with a new pay raise in tow for Eagles QB Donovan McNabb, the team may be willing to entertain offers for backup QB Kevin Kolb. Both kolbMcNabb’s and Kolb’s contracts are set to expire following the 2010 season. Wesseling suggests that a second rounder might get the job done and that the St. Louis Rams would be a good fit, pointing out that Rams Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur was Kolb’s QB coach in Philly and that incumbent starter Marc Bulger’s time is running short.

PCPTAKE: Again, this is purely speculation and highly unlikely. While the Rams might be a good fit, the Eagles would be unlikely to deal Kolb. A second round selection is intriguing though, since the Rams could very well be the worst team in the league this year and that pick could be #33 overall!

Eagles Make Questionable Move

12 06 2009

by Michael DeLuca

According to ESPN’s Michael Smith, Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to restructure the final two years of his contract instead of giving him the contract extension he had been seeking. Apparently, the Eagles are so opposed to the idea of having players play into their 30′s that they’d rather pay extra than have the mcnabb-5option to utilize them in the future.  McNabb is a was due to make $9.2 million this season and $10 million next season.  The new deal is reportedly for $24.5 million, with another $1 million in potential incentives.

At a time when players such as Sheldon Brown and Shawn Andrews are griping about their contracts, which are much more offensive than McNabb’s, it is odd the team chose to go in this direction.  In addition, why not at least have the option for an additional year if you are going to cough up the coin?  This move should only create additional animosity in the locker room, not to mention it makes McNabb that much more difficult to trade should that be the direction the team decided to go next offseason.

Donovan McNabb – Extension Now Likely

5 06 2009

mcnabbIt had appeared that the Philadelphia Eagles were simply going to restructure Donovan McNabb’s current contract, giving the superstar QB a bump in pay and appeasing him while they try to figure out what in the hell to do with Kevin Kolb.  It now appears that the team is set to extend McNabb’s deal, by two years…and with $19 million in guaranteed money!  According to Geoff Mosher at courrierpostonline.com, “Under his current deal, McNabb can opt out of his contract after the 2010 season. That same year his backup, Kevin Kolb, is also bound for free agency.

A reworked deal would grant McNabb two more years to lead the Eagles to their first Super Bowl title and demonstrate that he’s still among the league’s elite, even past 30.

It would also give the team two years to decide whether the torch should be passed on to Kolb, the team’s 2007 second-round pick.

Mosher goes on to say, “The team’s opinion of McNabb is more optimistic since its awkward benching of the franchise leader at halftime of its 36-7 loss on Nov. 23 in Baltimore.  A resurgent McNabb rallied the Eagles into the postseason and to the NFC Championship for the fifth time in 10 years.”
