Talk about a fall from grace. Yesterday, former Philadelphia Eagles superstar quarterback, Donovan McNabb, went unclaimed by 31 NFL
teams after requesting his release from the Minnesota Vikings. Among the teams that chose to “stick with what they got”, are the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans. Both teams are in the playoff hunt and starting backups due to injury. In Houston, both Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart are out for the season and the Texans will now rely on TJ Yates, a rookie 5th round draft pick out of North Carolina. In Chicago, Caleb Hanie is the new signal caller as Jay Cutler roams the sidelines with an injured thumb. Hanie was signed by the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of out Colorado State in 2008. Further worsening the blow for McNabb is that Chicago is his home town. If these two teams didn’t want to give McNabb a shot, at this crucial juncture, than this may be the end of the line for the greatest quarterback in Philadelphia Eagles history.

Defending Olsen Key To Eagles Victory
22 11 2009The Philadelphia Eagles biggest deficiency this year has been defending the oppositions TE. Tonight, the Eagles square off against the the Chicago Bears and the match up with Greg Olsen (who I openly campaigned for the Eagles to draft) may be the key to victory.

Fantasy Football: The First Round!
5 07 2009by Michael DeLuca
With less than two months until the start of the 2009 NFL season, it’s about that time to start looking forward to your fantasy football drafts. The magazine stands are packed with fantasy football mags and I’ve assembled a composite first round for a 12 team league from some of the more reputable sources. These results in no way reflect may personal opinions of where to draft players, I’ll provide my thoughts for each selection.
1. Adrian Peterson – RB, Minnesota Vikings – Peterson is pretty much the consensus #1 and rightfully so. Capable of putting up a 2000 yard season and 20 td’s. If your drafting #1, don’t overthink it, AP’s your man.
2. Maurice Jones Drew – RB, Jacksonville Jaguars – Fantasy owners are salivating over
the chance to own Jones Drew now that Fred Taylor is no longer in town. After the team handed Jones Drew a 5 year $31 million deal, coach Jack Del Rio said, “We want Maurice on the field more often. We believe he’s a feature guy and it’s his time. We’re excited about that. I’m very confident this is the type of young man that will go out and continue to display the things that have made him so popular to begin with. He’s gonna get plenty of work. We’re excited about getting him the ball more often.” It sure sounds like a recipe for success.
3. Michael Turner – RB, Atlanta Falcons – Michael “The Burner” Turner was quite simply a beast last year. 1699 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns are the type of stats that fantasy championships are made of. There’s talk in Atlanta that they’d like to lighten his load and get Jerious Norwood more involved in the offense but we’ve been hearing that for years. Don’t believe the hype, Turner will get his share of carries and td’s and will warrant a high selection on draft day. The offseason acquisition of TE Tony Gonzalez will only increase Turner’s value as teams will be less inclined to stack the box. Read the rest of this entry »

NFL Power Rankings – Week 6
7 10 2008by Michael DeLuca
Miami upsets, Philadelphia disappoints, Detroit blows, and the intrigue grows. Gotta love this game, here are your NFL Power Rankings heading into week 6.
1. New York Giants (4-0) - No Burress, no problem. The Giants rolled to a 44-6 victory over the Seattle Seahawks and solidified their stronghold on the #1 spot in the power rankings. They haven’t seemed to miss a beat on defense despite the losses of Michael Strahan to retirement and Osi Umenyiora to a season ending injury.
2. Tennessee Titans (5-0) – Best defense in the league thus far continued to roll against the Baltimore Ravens, limiting them to just 285 total yards on offense and 2 turnovers. Albert Haynesworth is a beast and Cortland Finnegan is gaining prominence as one of the league’s top cover corners. Chris Johnson is a lightning bolt. Kerry “Cocktail” Collins makes this offense more stable, allowing the defense to do what it do.
3. Dallas Cowboys (4-1) – They beat the Bengals, but it wasn’t as easy as some would like. Overall, they look to be losing a bit more mojo from week to week. Their dominating performance in Cleveland in week 1 was followed up by a week 2 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. In week three they traveled to Green Bay, where they had never won a game, and took it to the Packers for an impressive victory. Rookie Felix Jones has established himself a dynamic playmaker, but inexplicably didn’t receive a single touch in the week 4 loss to the Washington Redskins. Against the Bengals, Jones was once again involved and his 9 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown proved to be the difference. Read the rest of this entry »

NFL Power Rankings – Week 5
30 09 2008by Michael DeLuca
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a better start to an NFL season. Week four featured upsets galore, some key injuries, and much much more. Without further ado, I present the week 5 NFL Power Rankings.
1. New York Giants (3-0) - Sure they ascended to the top spot by virtue of a bye, but they are undefeated and are defending Super Bowl Champions. They haven’t seemed to miss a beat on defense despite the losses of Michael Strahan to retirement and Osi Umenyiora to a season ending injury. They coasted to wins in their first two games, but were just barely able to get past the lowly Cincinnati Bengals in week 3, winning by a field goal in overtime. They’ll be without Plaxico Burress (suspended) in week 5 in what should be an interesting matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, who may have their top two receivers returning from injury.
2. Tennessee Titans (4-0) – Best defense in the league thus far, hands down. Albert Haynesworth is a beast and Cortland Finnegan is gaining prominence as one of the league’s top cover corners. Chris Johnson is a lightning bolt. Kerry “Cocktail” Collins makes this offense more stable, allowing the defense to do what it do.
3. Dallas Cowboys (3-1) – Their dominating performance in Cleveland in week 1 was followed up by a week 2 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. In week three they traveled to Green Bay, where they had never won a game, and took it to the Packers for an impressive victory. Rookie Felix Jones has proven to be a dynamic playmaker, but inexplicably didn’t receive a single touch in the week 4 loss to the Washington Redskins. Some knuckleheads will argue that the Redskins should be above the Cowboys since they have the same record and Washington beat Dallas, but you can’t forget that Dallas has scored victories over both Philadelphia and Green Bay. Week 4: NFL Ramblings
29 09 2008by Michael DeLuca
Talk about parity! Two major upsets, even more see-saw battles, and lot’s of late game meltdowns. Here’s your rambling rundown of week four in the NFL…
NY Jets (56) over Arizona Cardinals (35) – The New York Jets might want to make a permanant switch to their throwback New York Titans AFL jerseys. Six touchdowns for Brett Favre. Wow! And it wasn’t against a cracker jack defense, Arizona can bring it. My guess is Ken Whisenhunt’s brilliant idea to stay on the road won’t be employed EVER again. Kurt Warner lost his longtime battle with fubmlitis, coughing up the pigskin four times, three of which were recovered by the Jets. He also threw three interceptions, one of which was returned for paydirt by Darrelle Revis. Anquan Boldin was carted off the field after suffereing a brutal helmet-to-helmet hit in garbage time. Boldin was immobile and, initially, onlookers couldn’t help but fear the worst. Luckily, Boldin did not suffer a neck injury and should regain his senses sometime before the New Year. What My Eyes are Watching – Eagles vs. Bears
26 09 2008By Mike Gill
Here are some of the keys to the Eagles – Bears game on Sunday night.
1. Health- Are the Eagles going to be healthy enough to compete throughout the game with a tough, physical Bears defense. Donovan McNabb should play, but could aggravate his injury at anytime. Brian Westbrook, if he goes, will be less then 100% and probably will be more of a decoy then a factor. Shawn Andrews will miss the game barring a miracle and Max Jean Gillies was disappointing in extended time verses Dallas. LJ Smith doesnt look good right now, meaning Brett Celek will have his role increased. Can they win under these conditions, sure, but it will make for a game that will much closer then it should be.
2. Pressure on Orton- The Eagles blitzed the heck out of the Steelers last Sunday and knocked Big Ben Roethlisberger out of the game. On Sunday, a QB with much less composure and game-experience will jump under center and if the Eagles can get to him like they got to Big Ben, it could be a laugher. Read the rest of this entry »

The Duke’s Picks – Week 4
25 09 2008by Michael DeLuca
The Duke’s Picks is off to an amazing 14-8 start, with three consecutive winning weeks to start off this year’s slate of NFL Football Games! I’m still stewing over Denver’s inability to polish off a potential blowout of the Saints last week, but hey…you can’t win them all. Let’s see if we can keep the ball rolling. Home teams are in caps, Duke’s picks are in bold. Away we go…
NEW ORLEANS -6 San Francisco – No Colston, no Shockey….ouch. Now let’s add in to that the suspension of starting left guard Jamar Nesbit for violation of the league’s policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. Oh, and Pro Bowl left tackle Jammal Brown’s hip has limited him in practice this week. Get the point? Take the 49ers, their relatively healthy and not half bad. Read the rest of this entry »
