Some Names to Watch in 76ers Free Agency Search

2 07 2009

With the free agency period under way since yesterday, the 76ers have been relatively quiet, other than to temper everyone’s enthusiasm in regard to bringing back Andre Miller. They are looking for other options, however and have targeted a few players who could be A.) Andre Miller’s successor and resident mentor to Jrue Holiday and B.) bench players who can score or defend. Some names to consider : Read the rest of this entry »

A Few More Names To Add To Phils Trade Watch

2 07 2009

Christmas in July officially came yesterday for all Americans, and especially Major League Baseball teams seeking an upgrade over their current roster. Some moves will be nondescript, but can prove to be fruitful down the stretch. Such moves as acquiring Joe Blanton or Matt Stairs can prove to be very valuable down the stretch run in a long season. Now that we’ve gotten to July, here are some more names the Phils have been linked to in recent weeks: Read the rest of this entry »

Eagles Guard Hires Rosenhaus; Seeks New Deal

11 06 2009

Max Jean-Gilles confirmed yesterday that he has retained Rosenhaus Sports as his representative. Rosenhaus, who represents Terrell Owens among many other NFL players, announced his new client on rosen-739209Twitter, the Internet messaging site.

“With the position that I’m in, I just needed someone with more experience,” said Jean-Gilles, who was previously represented by Impact Sports.

Jean-Gilles is in the last year of a four-year contract he signed after the Eagles drafted the 6-foot-3, 358-pound guard in the fourth round out of Georgia. Jean-Gilles started 10 games last season in place of the injured Shawn Andrews, but broke his fibula against the Cardinals on Nov. 27.

His recovery has progressed steadily, Jean-Gilles said. He has been eased into workouts and participated in team drills earlier this week for the first time during organized team activities. Rosenhaus wrote on Twitter that he hoped to have an extension before the next off-season.

“I’m just hoping it comes earlier,” Jean-Gilles said.

“As one of the top young offensive linemen in the NFL, this should be a very smooth negotiation process with the Eagles, especially now that he is healthy,” Rosenhaus wrote on Twitter.

The Eagles had no comment.

PCPTAKE: Just me or did Jean-Gillis suck last year? I thought Nick Cole performed considerably better than him when he replaced him later in the year. Jean-Gillis is in the last year of his deal so this really isn’t anything out of the ordinary.

Phils Bargaining Chips

8 06 2009

Jim Salisbury of The Philadelphia Inquirer penned an excellent piece on the Phillies potential bargaining chip, here ar his assesments…

The Untouchables…

Teams will ask about these guys, but they aren’t going anywhere.

Kyle Drabek, RHP, 21 - A hard-nosed competitor with a power fastball and power curveball. He projects as a top-of-dominic-brownthe-rotation starter or a closer. He could arrive in Philly late this season.

Jason Knapp, RHP, 18 - He threw 98 m.p.h. in a predraft workout at Yankee Stadium last year. He has the type of power arm you don’t see often and has shown progress with his off-speed stuff in his first full pro season at single-A Lakewood.

Dominic Brown, OF, 21 - A five-tool talent often compared to a young Darryl Strawberry because of his 6-5 frame and whippy lefthanded swing. The Florida State League all-star has the ingredients to be a major-league all-star if he keeps progressing. Read the rest of this entry »

Eagles Wheeling and Dealing + Draft Notes

26 04 2009

Well into Day 2 now of the draft and the Eagles still have yet to make a selection. Hold on for your hats with this explanation: The Eagles had pick #85 (3rd Round) which they traded to the New York Giants for an additional 6th rounder and their pick (#91, 3rd Round). They then traded that pick to Seattle for yet another fifth and a seventh, and a third rounder next year which is great value, unless you consider the fact that Jared Cook and Chase Coffman (both TE’s) were selected in that range of picks. Now the Eagles will own nearly 1/5 of the fifth round (six overall selections in that round) and two sixth rounders. Let’s see if they trade into the 4th round. Read the rest of this entry »

Eagles in the mix for Brady Quinn?

25 04 2009

Although it has not been reported anywhere, and this is PURE SPECULATION on my part, but the Eagles could be interested in Browns starting QB Brady Quinn. Consider the following:

1.) The Browns have a new coach
2.) They have Derek Anderson, and his ugly contract
3.) Quinn has gotten injured and still has not proved himself to be a front line starter
4.) Quinn would be ideal in Andy Reid’s West Coast Offense
5.) He would be learning under a master of QB teachers
6.) Donovan is close to being done
7.) Kevin Kolb may not be the answer.

In terms of adding depth at QB, i’m for it. The Eagles are clearly almost done with Donovan and have no clear cut favorite to replace him. AJ Feely is not the answer, and Kolb has not shown enough either way. With the Browns primed to trade him, why not the Eagles?

It’s a Ramblings Miracle! (They’re Back!)

29 12 2008

by John Ryandon-rickles

Before we start with the last edition of Rambling’s 2008, let me first apologize for my month long hiatus. My “day job” has been busier than usual lately, and well Christmas season can get crazy in the Northeast. Anyways, away we go…….

1.) First, the shameless shout out to my alma mater, as is custom. If you haven’t already picked up on this from reading anything I’ve ever written, I attended Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fl. The ironic part is that there’s a blossoming college with a new football stadium about to erect right in the heart of retirement country. The great part is: 1.) It’s 20 minutes from Lauderdale, 45 from South Beach (hence my sometimes used nicknames “The South Beach Guy,” The Notorious S.B.G, and “Johnny Ry the South Beach Guy) and about 3.5 hours from Key West, 2.) The women are gorgeous and there’s great variety (blondes, latins, haitians, dominicans, etc.) 3.) The school is rapidly expanding, including its athletics, and 4.) The school consists of mostly transplants from Philly, New York, and Boston leading to GREAT e-mails with friends, bitter Madden and fantasy outcomes, and enough ball breaking to fill up a dozen Don Rickles comedy shows. ANYWAYS……..They now have won 2 straight bowl games in a row, which happened to be there first 2 in their 8 year history in football (only 3 of which they were bowl eligible). Great stuff all around, especially in 2 games in which they were underdogs and the de facto road team, as they played Central Michigan in Detroit this year, and Memphis in Tennessee last year. Congrats, Owls. Read the rest of this entry »

Brand Out For a Month…A Blessing?

18 12 2008

By Mike Gill

Sixers forward Elton Brand will be sidelined for a month because of a dislocated shoulder suffered in the team’s win over Milwaukee on Saturday.  Brand, who is averaging 15.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game this season, has a fracture and tear in his right shoulder but will not need surgery.

Brand will miss at least a month for the Sixers.

Brand will miss at least a month for the Sixers.

My question for Sixers fans, is the a blessing in disguise?

The Sixers have really struggled to find a rhythm with Brand in the line-up, but this injury allows them to pretty much use the rotations and players that helped them make a run into the playoffs last season.

You should see a lot more of Willie Greene at the two, Thaddus Young at the four and Andre Iguodala at the three, with Louis Williams getting much more consistent play off the bench.  Also rookie Marreese Speights should see more time in Brand’s absence, but where will Brand fit in once he comes back? Do Eagles Fans Still Want Chad?

11 12 2008

By Mike Gill

All off season long, Eagles fans yelled and cried for the Birds to go get wide receiver Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson.  Now 15 weeks into this NFL season, it seems that Johnson again could be on the market when this miserable season for the Bungals comes to a close.

My question for the Eagles fans is…Would you still want to sign Chad?

While his 2008 season has been one to forget, Johnson has just 50 catches for 507 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Keep in mind those numbers would place him second on the Eagles in terms of catches, yards and he would lead all Eagle wide outs in touchdown grabs.

Johnson is just 30 years of age and has captured all of these Bengals records:

  • Most receiving yards in a season (1,440)
  • Most receiving yards all-time
  • Most receiving touchdowns (49)
  • Most receiving yards in a game (260)
  • Most seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards (6)
  • Most touchdown receptions in a game (3, tied with several other players)

So again, do the Eagles fans still want to bring in Chad Johnson?  Read the rest of this entry »
