Phillies Passed on Brandon Morrow

9 05 2012

Anybody remember when the Phillies passed on taking Brandon Morrow as part of the Cliff Lee deal with Seattle a few years back? I groaned about it then and wonder if anybody else would like to groan with me now. He is arguably the best pitcher in Major League Baseball through the first month and a half of the season. Good thing Phillippe Aumont, Tyson Gillies and Juan Ramirez. have all panned out.

Quintin Mikell Will Find Something Better To Do Than Watch NFL Draft

19 04 2011

Count at least one Eagles player amongst those that do not have the stomach for the NFL Draft this year.

“I usually am [a big NFL Draft guy], but I won’t be watching it this year,” said Quintin Mikell. “I’m going to find something better to do with my time.”

In talking to several players at Power Train in Cherry Hill, the temperature is luke-warm at best when it comes to the upcoming draft. Much like the fans, their excitement level has been affected by the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season.

Plus, for them, it’s a very personal matter.

“It’s going to be a little frustrating,” said Mikell. “How are we going to have a draft and there’s not going to be any football? How are you going to have a first-rounder cross the stage and shake [Commissioner Roger Goodell’s] hand?

“‘Welcome to the NFL. You have no job.’ ”

Reports surfaced in March that the NFL Players Association was encouraging top prospects not to attend the draft in New York City, though that movement appears to have lost traction. Draftees are in an awkward position where they will be immediately locked out by the team and league that selects them; just another oddity in an uncomfortable offseason.

“Whether rookies go up and shake the commissioner’s hand, that’s not really a big deal to me,” said defensive end Victor Abiamiri. “I just want to focus on the season getting here, playing football and making that money.”

Far from a boycott, Brent Celek and Todd Herremans will be throwing a draft party on April 30 at their new bar in Old City, “879.” But that appears to be more of a business decision, and less an endorsement of the event.

“I used to be into it, not too much any more,” said Celek. “I like that stuff, right now I just don’t have the time for it. I’m doing my own thing.”

Phils Interested In Lowry

28 01 2010

Scott Lauber of the News Journal is reporting that the Philadelphia Phillies will be one of approximately 15 teams in attendance for 29-year-old left hander Noah Lowry’s Tuesday audtion.  Lowry is seeking a one-year deal after battling thoracic outlet syndrome for the past several years.  Lowry has not been an effective pitcher since 2005 but was once believed to be one of the most promising prospect in baseball (and member of my fantasy team).

Media Expressing Dissapointment In Phils Haul

15 12 2009

Did Ruben give up too much...too late?

Now that the details are emerging regarding the three team blockbuster between the Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, and Seattle Mariners, many are beginning to express disappointment in the haul the Phillies will be receiving in return for Cliff Lee, Kyle Drabek, and Michael Taylor. I have to say I agree with them. My first thought is, if you were going to give up Drabek and Taylor, why not do this last year? The team could have made their run with Halladay and Lee at the top of the rotation and then traded Lee to the Mariners after the season. In my opinion, they’re giving up the same package that the Blue Jays wanted over the summer without the benefit of Halladay for the 09′ postseason. Poor form. Anyhow, here are a couple others that seem to agree with me…

Yahoo’s Jeff Passan seems to think the Phillies are the only team that didn’t make out in the deal, liking the hauls for both the Jays and Mariners.

MLB.com’s Noah Coslov is reporting via Twitter that a member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization doesn’t understand the deal from the Phillies point of view, since Michael Taylor is Major League ready right now.

Eagles Add TE

24 09 2009

by Michael DeLuca

The Philadelphia Eagles have officially announced the release of Rob Myers from the practice squad and have replaced him with Martin ruckerRucker, who was released by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday. Rucker was a fourth-round pick in 2008 from Missouri and was believed to be the Browns TE of the future not long ago. Many believed the team traded All-Pro tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. to the Tampa Buccaneers in order to make room for Rucker in the starting lineup. In the end, the Browns viewed Rucker as an above average pass catcher but inadequete blocker. In other words, the type of TE that the Eagles covet.

Pedro Will Start on Wednesday; Moyer to Pen

10 08 2009

By Mike Gill

Martinez will start on Wednesday

Martinez will start on Wednesday

The Phillies made it official today; Pedro Martinez will take over the fifth spot in the rotation, moving 46-year old Jamie Moyer to the bullpen.

A situation that was talked about since Martinez was inked about a month ago, finally played itself out a day after Moyer gave up 11 hits and three runs in a 12-3 loss to the Marlins.  The Phillies rotation, a question mark early in the season is now shaping up to be a potential strength.

There are still some questions to be answered.

1. Will Cole Hamels turn his mediocre season around?
2. Can rookie J.A. Happ continue to pitch at such a high level?
3. Will Pedro be able to find the form he displayed when he was the leagues top pitcher?
4. How will the bullpen look once everyone is healthy?

Just a few of the questions on my mind, feel free to weigh in.

Latest Update On Cliff Lee/Roy Halladay

28 07 2009

Philly.com is reporting that the Phillies and Jays continue to talk about a deal for Roy Halladay, even quoting J.P. Riccardi as saying (i’m paraphrasing here) that the Phils and Jays are still talking but that they (Phillies) still have not met their needs for Halladay. Meanwhile, Jayson Stark seems to think that both Riccardi and Ruben Amaro are under a tremendous amount of pressure to pull off a deal and he quoted multiple baseball men who believe it will eventually come to fruition. More updates to follow as they become available.

Jim Johnson, Eagles former D-Coordinator, Succumbs to Cancer

28 07 2009

Jim Johnson, who coordinated the Eagles defense from 1999-2009, has passed away today. Johnson, who has been battling cancer for some time now, had just recently been replaced as the defensive coordinator by Sean McDermott. Johnson leaves behind quite a legacy. Here are some of his career highlights:

- Former Defensive Coordinator of Notre Dame
- Former 2 year NFL player
- Was a husband, father, and grandfather
- Coached for the Cardinals, Bills, and Colts
- In 10 years as the Eagles defensive coordinator, Johnson’s defense allowed under 17 points in over half his games.
- In 10 years with the Eagles, 26 of his players played in Pro Bowls
- He currently has 5 assistants in either a defensive coordinator or head coach capacities: Sean McDermott, Leslie Frazier, Steve Spagnolo, Jim Harbaugh, and Ron Rivera.

Johnson will surely be missed. Jim Johnson: 1941-2009.
