Worst of the Worst: Ugliest NHL Goalies’ Masks

2 12 2008

by Kevin Collins

49hockeyAs I promised in my last post about the coolest goalies’ masks, here is the follow up entry: The Worst. I feel like I first have to say why I think certain masks are cool and others aren’t. I use pretty much three criteria to make my judgments. One: Does the mast properly represent the player’s team? Two: Is there anything on the mask that just doesn’t belong or is incredibly out of place? And three: Basically, does it look cool? Most of these masks failed in every category. Some of them will truly make you wonder just what in the hell some of these people were thinking when they submitted their ideas to their designers. So here we go: the ugliest goalie masks in the NHL… (In no particular order)

Did they Flyers do enough to surpass the Pens this off season ?

Did the Flyers do enough to surpass the Pens this off-season ?

By Mike Gill

After an exciting, yet unexpected run to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Philadelphia Flyers are almost back for their 42nd season in Philly.  The team will have 30 of its rookies on the ice starting Monday, but many wonder if the team added enough pieces to the puzzle this off-season.  Other than the addition of some younger, more athletic defensivemen, the Flyers didn’t really make a marque offseason addition.  Meanwhile, the Penguins still have Evgeni Malkin and Sid “The Kid” Crosby.

Gone are post-season hero R.J. Umberger, Vinny Prospal  and former captain Jason Smith.  They have been replaced with young defenders like Steve Eminger and Ossi Vaananen.  However, the guy the Flyers are counting on to be their biggest addition is a guy they already know well – Simon Gagne.

Like former Flyers Eric Lindros and Keith Premeau before him, Gagne is coming off a major concussion that enabled him to play in only 25 games, scoring 18 points.  One has to wonder if the Flyers are putting to much on the fragile shoulders of a guy who has suffered three concussions in a five month span.

While there is plenty of talent on the ice for the Flyers, one has to wonder if they got much better this offseason.

These are the questions that I have about the 2008-2009 Flyers: Read the rest of this entry »

Act II: The Best and Worst in Philadelphia

21 08 2008

by John Ryan

With today’s signing of Theo Ratliff to a one-year contract, the 76ers have brought back an integral member of their group that led resurgence in the early part of this decade. Ratliff wasn’t the first (and won’t be the last) former athlete to come back to Philadelphia for a second go-round. Here are some of the more notable names that have had successful (or not so successful) returns to Philadelphia. Read the rest of this entry »

Who is the best GM in the City of Philadelphia?

Paul Owens built the only Phillies World Series team in 1980.

Think back to 1980 in the city of Philadelphia.

That season, the Eagles were in the Super Bowl and won their first NFC East title under the direction of Jimmy Murray.  The Flyers, built by Keith Allen ended the 1979-80 season with a league best 116 points.  Meanwhile, Pat Williams and his Sixers won the NBA’s eastern conference with a 59 win season and the boys of summer won the teams only World Championship under the direction of Paul Owens.

Those sure were the days, all four teams in contention for league titles, but in Philadelphia fashion all but one fall short.

Now all four of the cities pro sports teams are again in contention, but who is now recognized as the best architect in the city.  The Sixers Ed Stefanski, Phillies GM, Pat Gillick, Paul Holgren of the Flyers and the Andy Reid/Tom Heckert duo of the Eagles all have their defining moments but have each shared some scrutiny.

Lets start with the newest of the bunch, Stefanski.  Its hard to argue what he has done since replacing Billy King in such a short amount of time.  Stefanski traded away the popular Kyle Korver and received virtually nothing in return but cap flexibility.  Then this off season, he traded away a few spare parts, including former first-round pick Rodney Carney, in a deal that opened the door for Stefanski’s biggest move to date – signing Elton Brand.  Getting Brand has legitimized the Sixers into a contender almost overnight, along with re-signing restricted free agent Louis Williams has finally given a pulse back to the Sixers dying fan base.
