Can Chris Pronger bring the Cup to Philly?

With a look at 2009-2010, the Flyers traded away 19-year old defender Luca Sbisa, forward Joffrey Lupal and two first round picks all for veteran blue-liner Chris Pronger. While many fans of the orange and black were happy when they heard the news, one has to wonder – did they give up to much to get a 34-year old guy?
Consider that the Flyers not only gave up their first round selection this season, but next year as well, but they also gave up a young, talented defender and a guy who scored 25 gaols and had 25 total points.
Meanwhile, the Flames acquired highly coveted defender Jay Bouwmeester from Florida for defensemen Jordan Leopold and a third round pick. Leopold is a nice player, not a great player by any means and might not even be signed by the Panthers, who really want the draft pick and to shed salary.
You can argue that Pronger is the better player then Bouwmesster, but Bouwmeester is younger and apparently doesnt cost quite as much. Pronger is certinly a guy who can stop guys like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the rest of the Stanley Cup champion Penguins.
So if you are a Flyers fan who liked the Pronger deal at first, how do you feel now knowing that Bouwmeester cost about half the price?

While the Philadelphia 76ers were still celebrating their drafting of Jrue Holiday, the Flyers made a strong move
towards making a Cup run in 09-10 by acquiring stout defensemen Chris Pronger from Anaheim. The move was a cost cutting move for Anaheim who had to contend with defensemen Scott Niedermeyer deciding to return next season with the Ducks. The move was costly for the Flyers, however, as they had to give up Jofrey Lupul and Lucas Sbisa and two first round draft picks (2009 and 2010).
PCP Analysis: While I don’t profess to be an expert in hockey, I do like the move. Sbisa is going to be a terrific defensemen in the league for a long time in my opinion, but they sorely needed a guy like Pronger who can score, hit, and intimidate. Lupul also was a key loss. He has scored 49 goals the past two season. Some other ramifications to consider: The move leaves the Flyers approx. 2.5 million under the NHL salary cap. They still need a backup goalie, and maybe another defensemen and maybe another winger. They also stand to lose Mike Knuble, as some are speculating that Knuble will get his desired long term pact from the Penguins. He will be hard to replace in a lot of ways. They are closer to a cup, though. They still run forwards out there such as Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Simon Gagne, Danny Briere, Claude Giroux, and Scott Hartnell. Key this year will be, as always though, the play of the defense and newly acquired Ray Emery. I still see a few missing pieces before they dethrone the Penguins. Meanwhile, the 76ers still seem a few years away from even cracking the top 4 in the suddenly “Beast” of the East.

There have been rumblings of an Elton Brand for Kirk Hinrich & Tyrus Thomas trade, but Mike McGraw of the Daily Herald argues that Thomas will not be traded.
Mark Eckel of the Newark Star Ledger thinks Jeff Van Gundy is the right choice for the Sixers head coaching vacancy now that Jay Wright is out of the picture.
Chuck Gormley of the Courier Post Online links the Flyers to trade talks for goaltenders Carey Price and Roberto Luongo.

Do you really want to look like this guy?

Danny Briere has been a big playoff producer
As the regular season begins to wind down for the Orange and Black, there are still three meaningful games left. The Flyers currently sit in the four spot in the playoff standings which would match them up with the Carolina Hurricanes, a good match-up for sure.
Earlier today I had a chance to talk to Flyers center Danny Briere who talked about his injuries, the playoffs and the reason he elected to come to Philly.
Here are just some of the topics we discussed in our chat with Danny.
1. Is this team better then last seasons team ?
2. Is Danny feeling fresh since he missed a lot of time with injury?
3. Is Marty Biron ready for another run?
4. How good are Carter and Richards?

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that center Danny Briere will undergo an exploratory surgical procedure on Thursday, January 22, according club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
“Due to lingering discomfort in his groin/stomach areas, Danny (Briere) will have an exploratory surgical procedure done tomorrow (Thursday, January 22) by Dr. William Meyers (at Hahnemann University Hospital). Recovery time will be a minimum of two weeks,” said Holmgren in making the announcement.
“I am very disappointed,” said Briere. “It’s been frustrating not knowing what is going on, so we have decided to go in and check things out.”
Briere, 31, recorded a goal and four assists for five points and two penalty minutes in three games for the Phantoms after being assigned to the Phantoms for conditioning purposes on January 14. He has registered five goals and four assists for nine points in nine games with the Flyers this season.
He has missed the last 21 Flyers games with a groin strain, and 30 of the last 31 overall due to injury.
PCPTake:It looks like this story is getting a little fishy. Do they want Briere back or not? It seems anytime he gets a chance to talk he takes a step back. On the other side, its not really fair for Luca Sbisa to get sent back to juniors, that’s kind of a major slap in the face and a waste of every ones time. The problem is of course money. Briere makes it and Sbisa doesn’t, so they need to figure out a way to make this all work. The only other way is to trade a guy like Scottie Upshall or Mike Knuble, but if that doesn’t happen its Sbisa to juniors or Briere under the knife.

Someday soon it will be over. The career of Brian Dawkins. Watch closely. Cherish these moments. You will tell your children and grandchildren about him. There will be, and have been, other great running backs, hockey goalies, centerfielders and quarterbacks. We have never seen the like of Dawkins in a Philadelphia uniform.
Dawkins is the perfect Philadelphia athlete. First he plays football. Second he plays defense. Third HE HITS. Fourth, he cares. He gets as depressed as the fans after a loss.
Fifth. He hits. Sixth, he’s basically a little guy. Seventh he hits. Eighth he loves the fans. Ninth he’s been here a long time (this is critical) And, of course, he hits.
You’ll talk for years about his hits on receivers foolish enough to cross the middle. And then you’ll laugh when you talk about the next time the same receiver came across the same area and dropped the pass because he was looking over his shoulder.
So does all that make Dawkins the most popular Eagle or even most popular Philadelphia athlete ever? Read the rest of this entry »

As I promised in my last post about the coolest goalies’ masks, here is the follow up entry: The Worst. I feel like I first have to say why I think certain masks are cool and others aren’t. I use pretty much three criteria to make my judgments. One: Does the mast properly represent the player’s team? Two: Is there anything on the mask that just doesn’t belong or is incredibly out of place? And three: Basically, does it look cool? Most of these masks failed in every category. Some of them will truly make you wonder just what in the hell some of these people were thinking when they submitted their ideas to their designers. So here we go: the ugliest goalie masks in the NHL… (In no particular order)
by Kevin Collins
Well, the NHL has been in full swing now for a little over a month and yet there seems to be a lack of hockey posts here at PCP…I wonder why?…Anyway, I decided to write about something that everyone has at least a little interest in…the goalies’ masks. How many times have you seen a shot on TV of the goaltender and you see his mask for a split second and yell at the TV to go back because you didn’t quite get a good look. Well, you can sleep easy now America, because I have compiled a list of my favorite masks throughout the National Hockey League. Read the rest of this entry »
