Sixers call Knicks about Amar’e Stoudemire trade?

The vultures are swirling around the big, rotten apple.

With the New York Knicks just 7-13 to start the season and All-Star forward Amar’e Stoudemire scoring 8 points per game less than last season, the first rush of trade winds is in effect.

CSNPhilly.com reports that it is the Philadelphia 76ers, an Atlantic Division rival, that phoned the Knicks to inquire about Stoudemire’s availability.

According to a league source, the Sixers have inquired about Stoudemire, though it was categorized as “due diligence.” Nothing is said to be imminent or even in the early stages other than just talk, the source said. Nevertheless, in past seasons the Sixers were reportedly discussing trade scenarios with the Phoenix Suns in order to acquire Stoudemire.

The Knicks’ early season struggles are well-documented. Without a capable point guard to point the group in the right direction, New York has stumbled out of the gate and is currently tracking to be a lottery team despite the presence of two All-Stars and Tyson Chandler in the starting lineup. Collins: Evan Turner Gets Increased Minutes With Lou Williams Out

5 04 2011

Lou Williams will miss the remainder of the regular season with a strained right hamstring that he suffered in Saturday’s loss to the Bucks.

Even though the Sixers have added veteran guard Antonio Daniels to the roster, coach Doug Collins announced that rookie Evan Turner’s role will increase in the wake of Williams’ injury.

Collins said after Monday’s practice that Turner will get a chance to reclaim a regular reserve role after having fallen out of Collins’ rotation.

Collins said that Turner, the second pick in last June’s draft, is most comfortable with the ball in his hands, which Turner will have as the backup point guard to starter Jrue Holiday.

Brand Ready To Rebound?

18 08 2010

Elton Brand has three years and $51 million remaining on the 5 year contract he signed in the summer of 2008 with the Philadelphia 76ers. The

Elton Brand of the Philadelphia 76ers

first two seasons were less than memorable, riddled with injuries and substandard play on the court.  He finished last season averaging career-lows in scoring, rebounding and minutes.

This season, however, the team would have us believe (they have to attempt to sell tickets after all) that we should be prepared to see the Elton Brand of old (long before he joined the 76ers).  According to the Philadelphia Intelligencer, Brand has been in regular communication with the team’s new head coach, Doug Collins, during the offseason. “I’ve talked to Elton numerous times on the phone and we’ve texted,” said Collins. “He’s in shape and his legs feel good. He feels like he’s getting more lift. In his words, ‘I’m ready to go.’ “

In addtion, Brand visited Philadelphia two weeks ago to train with Jesse Wright, the team’s strength and conditioning coach. ”He had a great workout,” said Collins. “More importantly, he weighed 255. That’s the weight I want him. I said, ‘Elton, I’d like to see you at 255.’ Here it is early August at 255. It’s going to take all that stress off his legs. To me, that’s an incredibly positive sign to what Elton would like to see happen this year.”

Stefanski Says Trade Won’t Change Draft Strategy

18 06 2010

Philadelphia 76ers GM Ed Stefanski attempted to dispell rumors today that the trade of Samuel Dalembert will alter the team’s plans for the upcoming NBA draft in which the 76ers hold the second overall selection. The team worked out Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors and Kentucky’s DeMarcus Cousins, two big men now believed to be options with Sammy’s departure, but pre-draft workouts were scheduled weeks ago. Said Stefanski, “I think we’re where we were before. The same draft options we had. We’re very fortunate to be drafting number 2. I don’t think (the trade) changes it a lot.”

Ohio State guard Evan Turner was believed to be the odds on favorite to be selected by the 76ers prior to the draft. Many believe he is the most talented player in this year’s draft pool. It’s been rumored that new head coach, Doug Collins, is lobbying for Derrick Favors however.

The wheels certainly seem to be in motion and this trade seems to be the beginning of a series of moves to retool the team. Stefanski said himself that he did not rule out pulling the trigger on another deal before or during the draft, saying “We are going to keep looking to see if we can tweak this even more.”

Philadelphia 76ers Trade Dalembert

17 06 2010

The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a trade with the Sacremento Kings in which they will send Samuel Dalembert and his expiring contract to the Kings in exchange for Andres Nocioni and Spencer Hawes. The deal was first reported by Chad Ford of ESPN.

Nocioni has a bloated contract, with $6.85M, $6.65M and $7.5M remaining over the next three seasons.

Hawes is 7’1 and just 22 years old. He will become a restricted free agent after the coming season. Hawes can shoot from the outside, offering the Sixers an element they have not seen from the center position in quite some time.

Iverson Returning To 76ers?

17 06 2010

During a chat with Philadelphia 76ers general manager Ed Stefanski yesterday, Stefanski explained that he was unaware of Allen Iverson’s future plans but did not say that the team would not be interested in bringing him back. “There is no news on Allen Iverson and we are not aware of what his plans are for the future,” Stefanski wrote. Iverson played in just 28 games of the last NBA season, 25 of which were with Philadelphia. He left the team for personal reasons following an illness to his daughter and his wife filing for divorce. News of both an alcohol and gambling addiction later surfaced.

Larry Hughes Back To The Sixers?

24 02 2010

The Sacramento Kings have waived Larry Hughes who was acquired  just last week as part of the three-team deal involving the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks.  The Bobcat, coached by Hughes former coach Larry Brown, are rumored to be interested in Hughes services.  A return to the 76ers would be a logical fit as well, since Allen Iverson has once again left the team to be with his ailing daughter and is rumored to be released.

PCPTAKE:  We’re all for any move that keeps Willie Green off the court.

76ers Make Trade

18 02 2010

Jodie Meeks - Philadelphia 76ers

Jodi Meeks

Two league sources have told ESPN’s Chad Ford that the Milwaukee Bucks have agreed to a trade sending Jodie Meeks and Francisco Elson to the Philadelphia 76ers for Primoz Brezec, Royal Ivey and a second round pick. The contracts of Elson, Brezec and Ivey are all expiring.
Meeks is a rookie drafted out of Kentucky (2nd round #41 overall), whose contract has a another two years remaining. Though shooting just 36% in limited playing time this season for the Bucks (11 mpg), he is known as a shooter and will have every opportunity to prove himself with the 76ers. He became expendable when the Bucks acquired John Salmons from the Chicago Bulls yesterday.
Elson is currently out after hernia surgery in early February and may not play much for the rest of the season.

76ers “Want To Bring Back Value” In Trade

17 02 2010

Philadelphia general manager Ed Stefanski addressed trade rumors prior to the team’s game against Miami on Tuesday night.

“If we send anybody out, we want to bring back value …,” Stefanski said. “We’re very active, and a lot of teams are looking for us to do financial deals, to send back expiring contracts – we want to improve the product on the court.”

The 76ers entered Tuesday’s game with a 20-32 record, but Stefanski doesn’t think it’s wise to “blow up” the team.

“I have talked to season-ticket holders, I’ve talked to fans, I’ve talked to the press, who all have different theories and ideas of how it would be better to, in their term, ‘Blow it up,’ ” Stefanski said. “When people say you blow it up, there are a lot of things you need to think about in just dismantling a team like that.

“You’re not always guaranteed when you dismantle that team and you draft in a certain spot, that the player you want is going to be there, the franchise player is going to be there. Or the year you may have the cap space, that the player will be there.”

Amare To The Sixers?

4 02 2010

According to a report from ESPN, the Philadelphia 76ers and Pheoeix Suns are discussing a deal that would send Andre Iguodala and Samuel Dalembert to the Suns in exchange for Amare Stoudemire.  According to the report, the Sixers are the side holding up the deal.

The trade makes sense for both sides, as the Sixers are desperate to unload Dalembert and have shown a willingness to package him with Iguodala in order to do so.  For the Suns, Stoudemire is seeking a max contract and a willingness from the Suns organization to spend more in order to improve the team…neither is going to happen.
