76ers: New Trade Rumor!

13 07 2009

by Michael DeLuca

Earlier this week, I had speculated that the New York Knicks would turn their attention to free agent pg Andre 44599190Miller after missing out on both Jason Kidd and Grant Hill. Today, there are reports that the two clubs may be working on a sign and trade that would involve Knicks starting pg Chris Duhon. Duhon is a 6-1 6th year player out of Duke. He began his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls. Last season, his first in New York, Duhon averaged 7.2 assists per game and shot .391 from 3-point range. He had a spectacular start to the season but fizzled out as the year progressed. Both teams are currently denying the reports.

Update: Either there’s nothing to this rumor or a lot of people are lying to Phil Jasner and the Philadelphia Daily News. A Knicks source has said the team hasn’t had any contact with Miller or his agent and have not offered Duhon in any trade scenario with the 76ers. Andre Miller’s agent, Andy Miller, says “there is nothing to report.” And Duhon’s agent, Kevin Bradbury, says “It’s not true. I have not had any conversations with Philly in regards to this rumor.”

Andre Miller To Knicks?

by Michael DeLuca

Apparently plan A for the New York Knicks was Jason Kidd. The team offered him 3 years at $18 million. Kidd andre-millerre-signed with Dallas. Plan B for the New York Knicks, Grant Hill. The team had reportedly offered Hill a one-year, $5 million contract or a three year deal at $10 million. The Phoenix Suns then increased their offer to Hill and, according to Yahoo! Sports, Hill is set to re-sign with the the team. Plan C, perhaps Andre Miller.

Miller would offer a significant upgrade for the Knicks at the pg position. He could, conceivably, be offered the same type of deal that Kidd was. Some have speculated that Miller may accept the mid-level exception from the team but that is unlikely, considering he has a better (though just slightly) offer on the table to return to the 76ers. Miller has also been linked to the Portland Trailblazers, but they are reportedly in trade talks that would bring Chicago Bulls pg Kirk Hinrich to the team.

Not Desperate Enough For Dalembert

The Houston Rockets are a sinking ship. Yao Ming is sidelined for the foreseeable future and perhaps his entire Samuel_Dalembertcareer. Tracy McGrady is unlikely to join the team until January following knee surgery. Ron Artest hopped on a life raft and headed for Los Angeles. One would say desperate times call for desperate measures. The Rockets, however, are apparently not desperate enough to take on disgruntled Philadelphia 76er Samuel Dalembert. Kate Fagan of the Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski contacted the Rockets to measure their interest in acquiring the 6′11 Guru of Goaltend. Not a player was mentioned for exchange, no proposal on the table, yet Houston’s simple response…no Sammy D. for us.

Philadelphia 76ers: Sign & Trade In The Works

1 07 2009

by Michael DeLuca

Andre Miller is reportedly seeking a three year deal.  The Philadelphia 76ers are not.  With numerous suitors for blazers-player-photoMiller’s services, there is little reason for him to sign a one year deal.  The most logical solution?  Sign and trade. The latest rumors circulating have the Sixers considering a sign and trade with the Portland Trailblazers that would send Andre Miller to the Blazers for fellow pg Steve Blake.  Some sources say the Sixers may get Travis Outlaw back in the proposed deal as well.  Both have expiring contracts, which would be very appealing to the 76ers.

Steve Blake spent both his rookie and sophomore seasons in the NBA with the Washington Wizards under, now Philadelphia head coach, Eddie Jordan.   He’s a 6′3 six-year pro with deceptive speed.  He started 69 games for the Trail Blazers last season, averaging 11.0 points and 5.0 assists per game.  More importantly to the Sixers, he shot 42.7% from three point range.

Portland General Manager Kevin Pritchard has already shot down the rumors but, as we all know, that doesn’t mean much any more.

Christmas Comes Early For 76ers

If the Philadelphia 76ers held a second round pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, they most likely would have been Temple Massachusetts Basketballlooking for a shooting guard. Perhaps a local kid. Perhaps, Lutheran Christian (Philadelphia) graduate and Temple Owls star SG, Dionte Christmas. The Sixers, however, did not have a pick. Surprisingly, Christmas went undrafted and the Sixers phoned just hours later, offering him one of their four remaining spots for the summer pro league in Orlando next week. A team source confirmed that Christmas has accepted the invitation and will join the team’s first-round selection, Jrue Holiday, and second-year pro PF Marreese Speights when workouts commence on July 2. The team plans to announce the other three players to join the summer league team on Monday.

Christmas is the only Atlantic 10 player ever to lead the league in scoring three times, averaging 19.5 in 2009. He is just the fourth Temple player to score over 2,000 career points and set school records for both three-pointers in a season, with 107, and for his career, with 319. For the Sixers, the league’s worst 3 point shooting team in 2009, Christmas has definitely come early!

Iggy Talks Sixers

Iggy can dunk, but can he shoot?

Iggy can dunk, but can he shoot?

So the Sixers have selected point guard Jrue Holiday, now whats next.  Sixers swing-man Andre Iguodala, talked to PCPSports on the Sports Bash with Me on 97.3 ESPN FM in South Jersey on Friday about his role in Eddie Jordan’s new system, what to expect from Holiday, Andre Miller and shooting the basketball.

It was good to check in with Iguodala take a listen and tell me what you think about Iggy this up-coming season.

Sixers Luck Out In NBA Draft

25 06 2009

by Michael DeLuca

The Sixers lucked out when Jrue Holiday slipped all the way to #17 in Thursday’s NBA Draft.  He was projected as a top jrueholidayten pick.  He’s not as polished or NBA ready as Lawson or Maynor, but was definitely the right selection for this club.  Resigning Andre Miller should now be a high priority, however, since Holliday can not be thrust into a starting role as a rookie.

The NBA.com report on Holiday’s strengths says “Prototypical size at the point guard position. Long arms help him collect steals and deflections. Great upside defensively. Rebounds and blocks shots. Has a high basketball IQ and good vision. An excellent team player.”

Iguodala In The War Room

25 06 2009

by Michael DeLuca

According to Andre Iguodala’s Twitter page, Iggy says “Walking into “war room”… I’m andreiguodalahelpin pick out my next teammate…”

My biggest concern this season is that Thaddeus Young may be ready to be the team’s premier player this season and yet, as the team is currently constructed, he’s set to be the sixth man on the team. The team has never hinted that they would consider trading Iguodala but you would think, at the least, that they would entertain offers if they could help the team. If Iggy is in the war room, I think that would be a pretty good indication that the team has absolutely no intention of moving him, regardless of the offer.

Some Sixers Solutions For Thought

23 06 2009

by John Ryan

With the annual NBA draft just days away, here are some of my thoughts on what the 76ers should be doing to fix their current roster. As it’s currently constructed, the 76ers have a glut of power forwards (Elton Brand, Maurresse Speights, Jason Smith), their two best players playing the same position (Thad Young and Iggy both are 3’s), and have no legit point guard on the roster. Side Note: Louis Williams is NOT a point guard, but he will start there if not better option is found in the draft or free agency.

1.)    Trade Samuel Dalembert at all costs: Yes, even if it means taking the talked about rumor of Radmonovich and Nazr Mohammed’s corpse. It adds money in the short term, but it fixes a few problems:  1.) It gives you another shooting option besides Jason Kapono. Vlad Rad has always been a good shooter, it’s just that recently he is an over paid shooter. 2.) It gives you a back-up big that can still block shots (think about Theo Ratliff’s role on the team last year) and a back-up plan in case Brand just can’t perform as a starting center. 3.) It moves you up 5 slots in a weak draft that is said to have 12 sure fire players, albeit players with no real high upside. The pick they’d get? 12. 4.) While it adds short term money like Kapono did, it doesn’t matter. All the contracts end in two years when Dalembert’s would have ended, and they have no cap space until then anyway. 5.) Dalembert can’t be popular in the locker room: he talks about every coach he has, he’s lazy, and is pretty much ineffective for a team that favors to his playing style. Dalembert Finally On The Move?

22 06 2009

by Michael DeLuca

The latest rumors have the Sixers in talks with the Charlotte Bobcats, sending C Samuel Dalembert and the 17th overall pick in the upcomding draft for F Vladimir Radmanovic, C Nazr Mohammad, and the 12th pick in the draft.  Though I’d love to see Sammy go, this trade wouldn’t help cap wise, since both Radmanovich and Mohammad have another two years remaining on their deals.  In actuality, the team would take on approximately $2 million more.

In addition, the jump to 12 in the draft really doesn’t seem to offer that much value, unless the team is really high on Ty Lawson and don’t want to risk that they’ll be able to nab him at 17.  Even worse, some are speculating that they want to trade up to acquire 7′3 Ohio State project B.J. Mullens.  I’m curious to see what the rest of you think, please feel free to comment after you place your vote.
