Phillies Surge Past Mets To Tie Giants For Wild Card Lead

16 08 2010

Kyle Kendrick pitched 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball against a left handed loaded Mets lineup, grabbing the Phillies the rubber game at Citi Field with a 3-1 victory. Brad Lidge picked up the save.

The victory kept the Phillies within two games of the National League East leading Atlanta Braves and pulled them into a tie with the San Francisco Giants for the Wild Card lead. The teams will square off in a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park starting Tuesday. Despite the intrigue of the match up, Philadelphia has attempted to downplay the significance of the upcoming series. “I never even look at the Wild Card,” Manuel said. “I don’t think about the Wild Card. Winning the division is what I look at.”

Phillies Left Handed Relief Options

13 08 2010

With J.C. Romero struggling mightily and Antonio Bastardo bouncing back and forth from Lehigh Valley, the Philadelphia Phillies have Mike Gonzalez Baltimore Oriolesacknowledged their desperate need for a reliable left-handed option from the bullpen.  Scott Eyre, retired, has been discussed and several intriguing waiver trade options exist. Brian Tallet of the Blue Jays, Brian Fuentes of the Los Angeles Angels, and Mike Gonzalez of the Baltimore Orioles could all get the job done.

The most intriguing, in my opinion, and perhaps the most easily attainable, would be Gonzalez. He signed a two year deal worth $12 million dollars last off-season to join Baltimore.  He’s spent most of this season on the DL but has pitched well since returning, yielding just two runs in nine innings of work since the all-star break.  His fastball is now back to over 90 mph. The Phillies, however, may be reluctant to make a move for Gonzalez unless Baltimore is willing to pick up some of his remaining salary.

Phillies Savior: Scott Eyre?

11 08 2010

So, yes, this is what it’s come to.  After another brutal display from the Phillies bullpen and J.C. Romero in particular, the Scott Eyre movement has begun. Eyre told John R. Finger of CSNPhilly.com that the team has not yet contacted him about a return but that he would consider coming out of retirement if they have interest in signing him.

Eyre is 38 years old and had offseason elbow surgery but told Finger that he feels great and would need only three weeks to prepare for big league action. Just last year, Eyre posted a 1.50 ERA in 30 innings with 6.6 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told Finger that the team “could use another lefty if he can get people out.”

Phillies Trade For Roy Oswalt: Oswalt still must approve

29 07 2010

Roy OswaltThe Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros have reached an agreement with the Houston Astros. The deal for Oswalt is believed to be in exchange for three players including J.A. Happ, minor league right hander Vance Worley, and another (currently unknown) minor leaguer. None of these details have yet been confirmed.

Happ, who just returned to the team on Sunday after missing all but hist first two starts, was drafted by the Phillies in the third round of the 2004 amateur draft. Current Astros GM Ed Wade was the Phillies’ GM at the time. Happ is scheduled to make just $470,000 this season and is still several years away from free agency

The trade is pending the approval of Roy Oswalt, who has a no trade clause. Oswalt has balked at opportunities to join the Phillies in the past but recently indicated a willingness to join the team. Oswalt had indicated that he would like time to make the decision, however, and this is likely why the trade happened several days prior to Saturday’s deadline.

Dominic Brown Called Up

28 07 2010

The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that the Philadelphia Phillies have called up top prospect Domonic Brown. With Shane Victorino going on the disabled list after last night’s injury, Brown could see everyday at bats in right field while Jayson Werth shifts to center field. Brown, 22, had gone 37 for 107, a .346 bating average, with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs since being promoted from Double-A. He was widely believed to be the most major league ready player still in the minors.

Phillies: Interest In Upton, Oswalt Holds Up Trade

21 07 2010

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of mlbtraderumors.com, Roy Oswalt is using his no trade clause to attempt to leverage the Phillies into picking up his $16 million option for 2012. The Phils have balked and this is why a trade has not yet been consumated between the Phillies and Astros.

In addition, Smith says that the Phillies have discussed trading Jayson Werth to the Tampa Bay Rays requesting either BJ Upton or Wade Davis in return and refusing to take on any of Werth’s remaining $2.8 million in 2010 salary.

Dominic Brown: 50th Most Valuable Trade Commodity in MLB

13 07 2010

Dave Cameron of fangraphs.com ranks Philadelphia’s Dominic Brown as the 50th most valuable trade commodity in all of Major League Baseball.  Among the interesting points that Cameron makes are that Brown is considered by many to be the best prospect still in the minor leagues (somebody please take Raul Ibanez off our hands), that he could be a solid Major League player “tomorrow”, and that you must have some serious value if your organization is unwilling to trade you straight up for the “best pitcher in baseball” (Roy Halladay).

Phillies Looking To Move Werth

9 07 2010

Multiple sources have indicated that the Philadelphia Phillies are shopping free agent to be, right fielder Jayson Werth in the hopes of acquiring a top notch starter to round out their rotation. If such a trade were not to occur and the team were to fall out of playoff contention, expect Werth to be shopped for prospects as the trade deadline approaches. According to reports the team has already been informed that the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays all have significant interest.

Werth, 31 years old, is hauling in $7.5 million this year while batting .277 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs. He has slumped as of  late.  Any trade that would occur in the near future would be of particular interest, as it would involve two playoff hopeful clubs looking to exchange pieces.  Javier Vasquez is the name that has come up most frequently, though I don’t see that as being a likely scenario. If Werth were to be moved it would clear the path for the team’s minor league phenom Dominic Brown to move up to the big club and become an everyday player.

Cliff Lee Returning To Phils?

17 06 2010

Jack Curry of the Yes Network had this to say on Twitter, “Spoke to baseball official who has regular contact w Phils. He said they are itching to add a starter and would love to get Cliff Lee back.”

Pedro Martinez Returning To The Phillies?

16 06 2010

According to Enrique Rojas of ESPNdeportes.com, the Philadelphia Phillies have talked to free agent Pedro Martinez and his agent regarding a possible comeback similar to 2009 in which the future Hall of Famer became a starting pitcher for the National League champions in August and into the postseason.

“We have talked to his agent, but there’s nothing so far,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “We are not negotiating, but we’ve been talking to him. It all depends on whether he wants to play or not.”

Sources close to Martinez told ESPNdeportes.com that he plans to pitch in the second half of the season and that he is undergoing a physical conditioning regimen in the Dominican Republic and Miami.

Amaro said talks between the team, Martinez and his agent began “a few weeks ago. We have talked to Pedro, but we don’t know (yet).”
