Brewers Better Make It

25 09 2008

by Ethan Greenberg

It’s the battle for the NL wild card and believe it or not, the Mets and Brewers are neck and neck with each other. Some say the difference maker is Santana, some say it’s Sabathia. Sabathia will pitch on 3 days rest- that’s the difference right? The Mets won’t take any risks with pitching Santana on 3 days rest unless they were hanging on to their playoff chances by a thread. For the Brewers, it’s been some 26 years and waiting. For the giant market Mets, it’s been like 2 years and waiting, and the only thing preventing them from winning the wild card is their blowing of a 7 game lead last September- I mean you really really have to choke to pull something like that off. Oakland A’s Future is Bleak Mr. Beane

9 09 2008

by Ethan Greenberg

So ever since the all star break, the star studded Oakland A’s have more losses than the 1962 Mets had their entire season [sarcasm alert] and yet not many people talk about this team headed down the tubes. [William Lamar] Billy Beane has worked hard to fill his team with as many young prospects as possible, by trading Harden, Blanton, Gaudin. And Duscherer, Street, Chavez, Cust and Ellis and anyone else on that team could be gone sooner rather than later. Beane has not been able to fill the seats in Oakland.

For a team that has a stadium across the ocean from the Giants park, which is beautiful and sells 30,000 tickets per night without Bonds playing for them, this doesn’t bode well for the franchise. Oakland plays in a stadium where football is #1, just like the Marlins, Blue Jays, and Twins- all ugly baseball stadiums. If you go back 10 years ago, you had a lot more of those ugly cookie cutter stadiums still all over the place- so we gotta be thankful that team owners have the guts to step up and get new parks in these cities that would love  the game of baseball just a little bit more if it were played in a beautiful new park. Jay Mariotti is Slightly Insane

4 09 2008

by Ethan Greenberg

It’s hard to understand what former Chicago Sun Times sports columnist was thinking when he decided to leave his job after he covered the Olympics, saying that all the internet media in Beijing lead him to believe that print media is near extinction. It’s easy to prove that, since less and less people are subscribing to print newspapers, and you can include sports magazines with that because many magazines are equipped with functioning websites as well. People under the age of 40 aren’t renewing their newspaper subscription; they’re turning on their computers and firing up the old reuters.com or cnn.com or what have you.

What’s that? Don’t talk about — playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?

27 08 2008

[I love Jim Mora. Thank you for that infamous tirade. Although I'm still waiting for Joe Girardi to do his Jim Mora imitation]

Seeing the Yankees behind Tampa Bay and Boston late in August is something that has never happened. Many people are dismissing the Yanks as having any chance of making the playoffs, and it’s not even September yet. Boston is not the best team in the division, and it’s no guarantee that they will finish ahead of NY- although as a non-Yanks fan, I’m hoping the Yanks just fade away so that every baseball fan will stop thinking NY has the slightest chance of sniffing the postseason. Not So Fast Brandon

21 08 2008

by Ethan Greenberg

The baseball season is winding down and talk is brewing on who should win the CY Young, MVP, Manager of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, all that good stuff. You look at the NL Cy Young and you figure it’s gotta be Brandon Webb- a guy who started the year with win after win and has been very solid all year despite the Diamondbacks inconsistency. Webb probably only needs 2 pitches to get by because of his powerful sinker, but he throws in a few others just to fool hitters a little more. Could you imagine if the D-backs were good all year? Webb could have 21 wins by now and with that many it would rule out anyone else from Cy Young candidacy. But as it turns out, your team performance somewhat affects individual achievement awards. Read the rest of this entry »

Instant Replay: Maybe Not So Good

18 08 2008

by Ethan Greenberg

Every day now it seems MLB is getting closer towards the start of instant replay, to be used on questionable home run calls. I’m ok with instant replay if it starts in April next year, but changing the rules during the season is not a good call by MLB and Bud ‘My Main Man’ Selig. In hearing what media people have to say about this, many people are in favor of the idea, but do not necessarily favor starting it either in August or September this year. One could argue that baseball has been slow to react, because many other major sports leagues have instant replay, in order to avoid making as many correct calls as possible.
