Can the Phillies Afford Halladay?

13 07 2009

Can the Phillies afford Roy Halladay?

Can the Phillies afford Roy Halladay?

So you want the Phillies to trade for Roy “Doc” Halladay?  Well according to Randy Miller from the Bucks County Courier Post the Phillies will not pull the trigger on this deal and the reason might be money.

Miller thinks that even though the Phillies are selling out the stadium (37 times in 2009) pretty much every night and are in first place and selling plenty of merchandise, they still may not have the go-ahead from the powers that be to make a trade of that magnitude.

The question I have is, how can this be an acceptable answer?  The Phillies are selling out, Brett Myers salary is coming off the books and yet they still can’t afford to bring in Halladay?

Take a listen to what Randy Miller has to say on this topic and some others on the Phillies at the All-Star break.

Zo Talks Pedro, Halladay and More

11 07 2009

By Mike Gill,

Can Pedro help the Phillies?

Can Pedro help the Phillies?

When the news spread like wild-fire about Pedro Martinez heading to Philadelphia, most of those reports were coming from former Philadelphia Inquirer Phillies beat writer, and current mlb.com reporter Todd Zolecki.

So is Pedro coming to Philly?  When is he coming? How much is he going to get paid? Does this mean the Phillies are ready to trade J.A. Happ to get Roy Halladay?  If the Phillies get Halladay, does that mean the Vernon Wells must be a part of the deal?

We asked all those questions and more in our conversation with Todd Zolecki from mlb.com which you can listen to if you click below.

Ibanez Returns!

6 07 2009

By Mike Gill

Raul Ibanez returned to action in today’s Reading Phillies series finale defeat to the Connecticut Defenders.  Ibanez played and went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. After the game he said that he felt absolutely no pain, but that he’s likely going to play one or two more minor league games before he returns. They would probably be at Lehigh Valley Tuesday and Wednesday night.

For more on Ibanez, check back to pcpsports.com and leave a comment here on if you think he should play in the All-Star game next week or do you think he should sit out and get ready for the second half of the Phillies season.

Carrasco Could be Called-Up

28 06 2009
Will Carrasco get the call?

Will Carrasco get the call?

By Mike Gill

With a low 90′s fastball that had plenty of good movement and a change-up that was making hitters look flat out goofy, it looks like Carlos Carrasco is finally tired of getting passed over when it comes to getting the call to the big league club.

He’s tied together two good starts and I’m thinking now that he could be next up.  The Phillies might need someone to replace Antonio Bastrado and with the trade deadline about a month away, now could be the right time to showcase Carrasco and see if he can either a) pitch in the bigs or b) get enough attention with his stuff to fetch you back a top-tier, big-league ready pitcher, like say – Cliff Lee.

When Brett Myers went down, the Phils had to scramble for an arm.  They went with Bastrado who really has shown the abilty to master one big-league pitch, his fast ball.  But the Phils are desperate for another arm and what is consider to be the best, just might not be ready.

Guys like Kyle Drabeck, Joe Savery and Vance Worley are popular names because they are young, and we all love the next young, top-flight name, but are they really ready to help a team win a world series now?

Andrew Caprenter, Kyle Kendrick and Rodrigo Lopez are all guys having nice seasons at the AAA-level, but they too wont get the trophy back in Philadelphia.

If you want help from with-in, the guy to call on is Carrasco.  He has the best stuff and gives you the best shot to do a lot of things – win, trade and find out if you have a future ace all in one shot.

So who do you think the Phillies should call-up if Bastrado has to miss anytime?

Did the Flyers Give Up to Much for Pronger?

Can Chris Pronger bring the Cup to Philly?

Can Chris Pronger bring the Cup to Philly?

By Mike Gill

With a look at 2009-2010, the Flyers traded away 19-year old defender Luca Sbisa, forward Joffrey Lupal and two first round picks all for veteran blue-liner Chris Pronger.  While many fans of the orange and black were happy when they heard the news, one has to wonder – did they give up to much to get a 34-year old guy?

Consider that the Flyers not only gave up their first round selection this season, but next year as well, but they also gave up a young, talented defender and a guy who scored 25 gaols and had 25 total points.

Meanwhile, the Flames acquired highly coveted defender Jay Bouwmeester from Florida for defensemen Jordan Leopold and a third round pick.    Leopold is a nice player, not a great player by any means and might not even be signed by the Panthers, who really want the draft pick and to shed salary.

You can argue that Pronger is the better player then Bouwmesster, but Bouwmeester is younger and apparently doesnt cost quite as much. Pronger is certinly a guy who can stop guys like Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the rest of the Stanley Cup champion Penguins.

So if you are a Flyers fan who liked the Pronger deal at first, how do you feel now knowing that Bouwmeester cost about half the price?

Happ to Rockies…Almost happened?

24 06 2009
Happ on the move?

Happ on the move?

By Mike Gill

If the Phillies had their way, J.A. Happ would be pitching in Colorado right now.  According to Joel Sherman from the New York Post,  the Phillies had a deal in place with the Rockies for right-handed pitcher Jason Marquis and outfielder Ryan Spillborghs.  Sherman said in his piece: “But as talks were heating up on this deal, the Rockies took off. And once they took off they felt it would be wrong to make a trade that would be interpreted as surrender in the clubhouse and among the fan base. So they tabled talks and now Colorado is quietly out in the marketplace seeing if it can find a veteran reliever.”

PCPTake: Happ has been a pretty pleasant surprise, but he is not going to be as consistent as the Phillies need to make a serious run.  Spillborghs is a solid fourth outfielder who can start if needed.  He is a career .295 hitter, but doesn’t have a lot of pop, which is what the Phillies are looking for off the bench.  As for Marquis, he is a veteran guy in the mold of Brett Myers.  he will eat innings, give you real solid games, mixed in with some five-run first inning games.  He has had a real solid season with the Rockies this year, going 9-4 (Career 88-74) with a 3.71 ERA in 14 starts.

While I think Happ is a lot to give up and I am not a huge fan of Marquis, I think the Phils can afford to take a shot on this type of deal, if another innings eating pitcher can be had down the line.

What Phillie are You Willing to Part With ?

28 05 2009

By Mike Gill

Could Carrasco be traded?

Could Carrasco be traded?

While we are still two months away from the trade deadline, names will begin to surface in trade talks now.  The question is, what players are you willing to move to get better now?

Go back in time about 10 years, remember the trade rumors that included names like Utley, Howard, Hamels and Floyd.  Everyone was ready and willing at the time to give away the Phillies stars of today to get better right away then.

Remember, Utley was going to San Fransisco for Barry Zito.  Ryan Howard was heading to Pittsburgh and Cole Hamels and Gavin Floyd’s names were mentioned in just about every deal.

Now the names we keep hearing in trade talks are Drabek, Marson, Donald, Carrasco and Savery.  So the question is, which of these guys are you willing to part with and what do you want in return. Read the rest of this entry »
