Joe Savery

Joe Savery

The Phillies are an organization that is deep with young talent; especially on the mound.

One of those young pitchers, is Joe Savery.

The left-hander is now pitching at AAA Lehigh Valley and is having an outstanding season between both AA and AAA this season.

Savery was a guest on the Sports Bash on 97.3 ESPN FM to talk about his future, his past as a hitter, the journey through the Phillies minor league system and more.

Pedro Will Start on Wednesday; Moyer to Pen

10 08 2009

By Mike Gill

Martinez will start on Wednesday

Martinez will start on Wednesday

The Phillies made it official today; Pedro Martinez will take over the fifth spot in the rotation, moving 46-year old Jamie Moyer to the bullpen.

A situation that was talked about since Martinez was inked about a month ago, finally played itself out a day after Moyer gave up 11 hits and three runs in a 12-3 loss to the Marlins.  The Phillies rotation, a question mark early in the season is now shaping up to be a potential strength.

There are still some questions to be answered.

1. Will Cole Hamels turn his mediocre season around?
2. Can rookie J.A. Happ continue to pitch at such a high level?
3. Will Pedro be able to find the form he displayed when he was the leagues top pitcher?
4. How will the bullpen look once everyone is healthy?

Just a few of the questions on my mind, feel free to weigh in.

Cliff Lee

Cliff Lee

The Phillies have gotten themselves a second-fiddle.  By acquiring Cleveland left-hander Cliff Lee, the Phillies have bolstered their rotation by adding more depth behind Cole Hamels.

Today on the Sports Bash on 97.3 ESPN FM in South Jersey, ESPN The Magazine’s Keith Law talks about the deal, how Lee will fit in with the Phils and about the deal for Halladay that wasn’t made.

He had some very interesting things to say about Kyle Drabek and much more…a must listen.

Eagles O-Line Needs to Gel

27 07 2009

The Andrews brothers will be key to the Eagles success in 2009.

The Andrews brothers will be key to the Eagles success in 2009.

With Eagles veterans scheduled to report to camp on Wednesday, one of the main areas of cocern for me on the offensive side of the ball is how quickly will the offensive gel.  The birds added pro-bowl tackle Jason Peters from Buffalo and guard Stacey Andrews to a line that at times struggled to protect Donovan McNabb and consistently create running room for Brian Westbrook.

This season, with bigger, more athletic tackles, could the Eagles be primed to run the ball more?  Probably not, but it should be interesting to see how well the guards play with the new tackles.  Especially on the right side where the Andrews brothers have flipped positions.

On the left side, the Eagles have added Peters, who will be paired with incumbent guard Todd Herramans.  Herramans is one of the smaller guys on the line at 6-6 320 pounds.  How will he pair up with Peters and will the Eagles be able to run the ball to the left side when they need that third and one, late in the fourth quarter.

To look deeper into the offensive line, and more on the Eagles, we talked to former Eagles offensive linemen and Super Bowl champion, Barrett Brooks on the Sports Bash, on 97.3 ESPN FM.

Right-hander Chad Durbin (right latissimus strain) and left-hander J.C. Romero (strained left forearm) were both placed on the disabled list, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.

To fill their spots on the roster, right-hander Tyler Walker had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley and right-hander Andrew Carpenter was recalled from Lehigh Valley.

Walker will wear No. 52 and Carpenter will wear No. 48.

Drabek Speaks!

Doug Drabeck

Doug Drabeck

Former Cy Young winner and father of Phillies “untouchable” prospect Dough Drabek was on 97.3 ESPN, The Sports Bash today, talking about his son and more.

He mentions that he thinks that Kyle has a better fastball, and a better curve already then he ever had.  Doug was a pretty good pitcher, winning a Cy Young in 1990, overall he was 155-134 with a 3.73 ERA.

If Kyle ends up with numbers similar to his dad and wins a Cy Young would you trade him for Roy Halladay?

Kendrick Scratched from AAA Start

21 07 2009

Kyle Kendrick

Kyle Kendrick

The Phillies bumped starter Kyle Kendrick from his scheduled start tonight at Lehigh Valley.  Chuck Hixson from phillybaseballnews.com was on 97.3 ESPN FM’s, The Sports Bash and said the Phils were interested in Washington Nationals outfielder Josh Willingham.

Naturally Phillies fans thought that Kendrick being scratched meant he was on his way to Washington.  However, according to our sources that’s not the case.

We are told that Kendrick was bumped due to the fact the Phillies reliver Clay Coundrey is still hurting a bit and in if he cant go, then Kendrick would be the guy who gets the call-up to replace Coundrey.

Phils to Add a Right-Handed Bat and Arm?

20 07 2009

By Mike Gill

Willingham

Willingham

It looks like the Phillies and the Nationals could become trade partners and it could allow the Phillies to add that right-handed bat that they have been looking for.  Today on 97.3 ESPN FM in South Jersey, Chuck Hixson from Phillybaseballnews.com said that the Nats have scouted the Phillies minor league games for seven straight nights.

The bat the Phillies the could be interested in…Josh Willinghman.

Willingham is heating up and is having a decent season for the last-place Nats, hitting .284 with 12 home runs.  That production would be just what the Phillies need coming off the bench.

In other news, according to Ed Price of the MLB Fanhouse, the Phillies sent a scout to see Arizona right-handed closer Chad Qualls throw over the weekend.

Makes you wonder if the Phils are happy with the Romero, Madsen, Lidge tri-fecta at the back end of the bullpen.
