Week 16 NFL Picks

20 12 2008

By Tom Peters

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. The ice storm in the Northeast left me powerless until late Wednesday night. Luckily I made my ESPN picks that week to the tune of a despicable 8 – 8. It was a good week to pick poorly because none of you could see the picks. (Losses were Tampa, Washington, KC, GB, Tennessee, Arizona, Baltimore, NYG) My record for the year is now 141 – 82 – 1.

I’m looking forward to these games, including Indy (I did pick them to win). With playoff spots on the line, this week’s games will be very competitive and hard to pick.

Let’s go.

Dallas Cowboys ( 9 – 5 ) v. Baltimore Ravens ( 9 – 5 )

You have to respect Dallas after beating the Giants last week. However, don’t be too quick to overrate them and pencil them into the playoffs. They beat a Giants team that did not have Jacobs and 2/5 of their offensive line (Boothe sucks by the way, thankfully Proctor made him look intelligent). Read the rest of this entry »

Week 14 NFL Picks

6 12 2008

By Tom Peters

I actually had a very good week last week. I went 12 – 4 and I made terrible picks in the Bears (I should have more faith in my Vikings) Bills and over estimated the Cardinals. Nonetheless, I now boast a record of 123 – 68 – 1.

With 14 games on Sunday, I have a lot of writing to do, so let’s get to it.

Jacksonville Jaguars ( 4 – 8 ) v. Chicago Bears ( 6 – 6 )

The ears got their asses handed to the last week at Minnesota. The offense looked inept and the defense had a hard time stopping the run. Under normal circumstances, a team dedicated to the run like Jacksonville should have the advantage. But this is the Jaguars, one of the few teams to look worse than the Bears last week. I think the Jaguars have given up on the season and the offensive line is too porous. The Bear defense should control this game against the biggest disappointment in the league. Don’t forget, this game is in Chicago and it will be cold and windy.

MY PICK: Bears

Minnesota Vikings ( 7 – 5 ) v. Detroit Lions ( 0 – 12 )

Trap game!!!! The Vikings needed a generous pass interference penalty and a last second field goal to beat the Lions 12 – 10 in Week 6. While the Vikings handily beat the Bears, it was all due to the running game and the goal-line Read the rest of this entry »

Thursday’s Week 14 Pick

3 12 2008

Yay, this will be an exciting game. Good thing no one gets the NFL network. I’ll probably watch a little bit of it then switch to college basketball.

Let’s get to this week’s edition of the West Coast Follies

Oakland Raiders ( 3 – 9 ) v. San Diego Chargers ( 4 – 8 )

Both teams suck. Oakland was expected to suck, and San Diego wasn’t. How they weren’t expected to suck with Norv Turner as their coach is way beyond me.

The game basically boils down to this, San Diego is far better than Oakland (who called the KC game by the way? GENIUS!!!) I expect San Diego to out run them, out pass them and out play them.

MY PICK: Chargers (but they won’t cover)

Week 13 NFL Picks

29 11 2008

by Tom Peters

I did not do so well in my selections last week. My bad case of overestimitis and underestimitosis led me to a mediocre 9 – 7, bringing my season record to 111 - 64 – 1, not bad for a bowling league.

My thanksgiving games were brought to you my the singer Meat Loaf. I won’t be sad cause two out of three ain’t bad.

I have awoken from my tryptophan induced coma to bring you this weeks picks. So, here we go:

San Francisco 49ers ( 3 – 8 ) v. Buffalo Bills ( 6 – 5 )

The Bills looked impressive in steamrolling the Chiefs last week. Trent Edwards finally looked like the quarterback he should be. The 49ers are going to cold, frigid, windy Buffalo for a 1pm game. West Coast teams still have yet to win an afternoon game on the East Coast. The streak should continue. Face it, the 49ers just aren’t that good.

MY PICK: Bills

Baltimore Ravens ( 7 – 4 ) v. Cincinnati Bengals ( 1 – 9 )

Does anyone really expect the Bengals to have any success against the Ravens defense. We saw what happened when they played the Read the rest of this entry »

NFL Thanksgiving Picks

26 11 2008

By Tom Peters

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope your turkey is more enjoyable than the games the NFL has selected for you today.  In my 29 years on Earth I have never been less excited about Thanksgiving football.

Anyway, here are the picks for this year’s edition of Thanksgiving Football:

Tennessee Titans (10 – 1) v. Detroit Lions (0 – 11)

Ironically enough, this is not the first time the Lions will be winless on Thanksgiving. It won’t probably be the last. But i digress. The Titans are pissed after Read the rest of this entry »

Philly Fans: SHUT UP!!!!

24 11 2008

By Tom Peters

To the Eagles Fans:

You wanted Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb to leave town. You’ve made them more unpopular that the current President. You got tired of seeing the Eagles flounder game after game and loss and tie after loss. You wanted this to be Donovan McNabb’s last season.

Well, you got what you wished for. Kevin Kolb, the former Houston Cougar. McNabb was 8-18 for 59 yards. Kolb was 10-23 for 73 yards with 2 INTs, one of which was returned for a TD because David Akers is a better tackler than Kolb. If I recall, he was ineffective as his fellow NFL alumni (David Klingler & Andre Ware), and they broke NCAA records.

You wanted to see someone other than #5 (whose number will be retired in a few years) behind center. You don’t need that quarterback taking you to four straight NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl. Anyone can throw to those talented receivers. A different quarterback could make Brian Westbrook healthy again.

For the first time in four years, Andy Reid gave you what you wanted. Just remember the old Joni Mitchell song “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got til it’s gone, they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”

If McNabb were a Viking, he’d be a division leader at 8-3 and you’d really be sorry.

Now that you’ve seen a glimpse into the ghost of Eagles future, shut up!!!! You should be satisfied with one championship this year. Everything else is just gravy.

PS: I will officially add Andy Reid on my list of coaches to be fired for benching McNabb and giving you what you want.

Week 12 NFL Picks

22 11 2008

By Tom Peters

Last week wasn’t as terrible as I thought it would be. A tie game can really throw a wrinkle in your picks, but the damages was minimal. Last week I went 10 – 5 – 1, bringing the season record to a robust 102 – 57 - 1.

For the first time this season, I picked the Thursday night game correctly and I get to start off the week with a chance for that perfect week.

Let’s get it started, I have company coming for the daughter’s 3rd birthday party and it’s now or never. Family members are tough to ignore, no matter how hard you try. Read the rest of this entry »

Thursday’s Night NFL Pick

20 11 2008

It’s my daughter’s 3rd birthday today and I have to post this real quick. Thankfully, there isn’t much of a game to analyze. Of course I dno’t know if I’d trsut my pick since I haven’t gotten a Thursday night game right yet.

Cincinnati Bengals (1-8-1) v. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3)

Cincy is coming off the moral victory last week against the Eagles, but they weren’t the same Eagles that beat Pittsburgh earlier in the season. I expect the Steelers to cause a lot of turnovers and a lot of havoc for Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bengal offense.

MY PICK: Steelers (although two ties would be cool)

MY DAUGHTER’S PICK: Bengals (she thinks Tigers are cute, she hasn’t seen Ocho Cinco)

A Letter From Jim Fassel to Al Davis

16 11 2008

Rumor has it that former Giants coach Jim Fassel sent a letter to Al Davis expressing his interest in coaching the Raiders. I bet the letter went something like this:

Dear Mr. Davis:

My name is Jim Fassel and I am very interested in being the next coach of the Oakland Raiders. The following are reasons why I feel I would make a good coach for you.

First, I am a tool. I will have press conferences in which I’ll put all my chips on the table and give the Oakland Raiders the soundbytes and attention they truly deserve. When you speak, not only will I listen, I will obey. I am so desperate to coach agains that I’ll personally change your Depends and clean your bedpan whenever necessary. That even includes halftime or during the 2-minute drill. Read the rest of this entry »

Week 11 NFL Picks

15 11 2008

By Tom Peters

Well, I finally finished my midseason reports for all the divisions. If you missed them, you can get them here….. AFC EAST, AFC NORTH, AFC SOUTH, AFC WEST, NFC EAST, NFC NORTH, NFC SOUTH, NFC WEST.

Last week I went 10 – 4 again, bringing my season record to 92 – 52 for the season. I already begin this week 0 – 1 after another Thursday night last minute debacle. The Jets are still overrated and will eventually get complacent and lose to a bad team, but we’ll cross that bridge at a later time. Without further ado, here are my picks for Week 11 in the NFL.

Denver Broncos (5-4) v. Atlanta Falcons (6-3)

This is a game that is hard to pick because you don’t know what Denver is going to do. We know Atlanta is a good team. Matt Ryan has been hot the last few weeks throwing 2 TD per game. The problem for Denver is that there are too many weapons to stop. Denver’s pass defense is poor, their run defense is even worse. Atlanta’s defense will not give it away like Cleveland did last Thursday night.

MY PICK: Falcons

Philadelphia Eagles (5-4) v. Cincinnati Bengals (1-8)

Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson must be licking his chops. The Bengals have an inefficient running game and Ryan Fitzpatrick under center. Granted Fitzpatrick is improving, but he hasn’t seen pressure like this. The Eagles are reeling after their tough loss to the Giants Sunday night and I suspect Fitzpatrick is going to spend a lot of time on his back.

MY PICK: Eagles

Chicago Bears (5-4) at Green Bay Packers (4-5)

This is another on of those tough games to pick. We’re not sure on the status of Kyle Orton. Regardless, the Bears will have issue at quarterback. Grossman is unreliable and has the tendency to make the stupid turnover. Orton will not be at 100%. Matt Forte needs to have a big game in order for the Bears to be successful. The problem…..he’s only rushed for over 100 yards twice this season. The good thing……The Packer defense has not been great in stopping the run. The Bear defense isn’t what it used to be, but the Packers can’t run the ball so expect Rodgers to have a few interceptions and the Bears should spend a lot of time in the nickel and dime packages.
