Eagles: Quick Hits

  • The projected starting five for the Philadelphia Eagles have yet to line up next to one another and, after news today that left guard Todd Herremans will undergo surgery today to repair a stress fracture in his left foot, it may be quite a while before the get a chance to. The team initially believed he would be ready for the season opener, but an MRI this week revealed the fractures. “He’ll miss a couple games here,” Reid said. “We’ll see how the surgery goes.” Nick Cole will replace Herremans in the starting lineup. Cole replaced Max Jean Gillis as a starter late last year and, many believe, actually outperformed Jean Gillis. With the number of setbacks this team has suffered, Cole could be a very important piece of the 2009 puzzle for the Birds.
  • Look for former Eagle, Jon Runyan, to sign with a team instantly after the start of the regular season. Teams are reluctant to sign Runyan now becauseĀ  his salary would be guaranteed for the year once the season begins. Not the case if signed after week 1. One likely destination could be the San Francisco 49ers, who just learned that Marvel Smith will be unable to overcome lingering back problems and has decided to retire. Smith was just signed the offseason and was expected to be a big upgrade for the 49ers as their starting right tackle.
