Philadelphia Eagles: Shawn’s Back

Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Lineman Shawn Andrews: Shawn’s back, as in returning after missing the majority of the 08′ season.  Shawn’s back, as in the one that caused him to miss the 08′ season, is acting up again.

This year, the Eagles offensive line has been completely rebuilt. LT Tra Thomas has moved on to andrewsJacksonville and the Eagles acquired Pro Bowl LT Jason Peters to take his place. Shawn Andrews, has been shifted to right tackle, replacing veteran Jon Runyan, His brother, Stacy Andrews, was brought in from the Cincinnati Bengals as a free agent and will play right guard.

The biggest question mark on the line heading into camp is undoubtedly Shawn Andrews. He spent all but the first two games of the 08′ season on his couch, rehabbing a back injury and dealing with clinical depression. Not only is he making his return to the team, but he’s doing it at a new position. And things have not started off well. Warrick on 76ers Radar

According to Phil Jasner of the Philadelphia Daily News, “The 76ers are among two or three teams negotiating with unrestricted free-agent forward Hakim Warrick, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Warrick, from Friends Central, has spent his 4-year NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Sixers, the source said, and the Milwaukee Bucks are involved with the 6-9 Warrick, although ESPN.com is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers are also in the picture. Read the rest of this entry »

The Phillies have gotten themselves a second-fiddle.  By acquiring Cleveland left-hander Cliff Lee, the Phillies have bolstered their rotation by adding more depth behind Cole Hamels.

Today on the Sports Bash on 97.3 ESPN FM in South Jersey, ESPN The Magazine’s Keith Law talks about the deal, how Lee will fit in with the Phils and about the deal for Halladay that wasn’t made.

He had some very interesting things to say about Kyle Drabek and much more…a must listen.

Phils Acquire Reigning AL Cy Young Winner Cliff Lee

According to Scott Miller of CBSSports.com, “The Phillies have acquired Cliff Lee from the Indians instead (of Roy Hallady), multiple lee-782730sources involved in the talks told CBSSports.com. The teams were in heavy discussions this morning, and as of early afternoon, the deal had come together, pending physicals. The Phillies, who have been searching for a right-handed bat, will also get outfielder Ben Francisco from Cleveland. The Phillies will send pitchers Jason Knapp and Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson to the Indians, an AL executive told CBSSports.com’s Scott Miller.”

Phils: Trade Winds Circling

Carlos Carrasco was scratched from his Triple-A afternoon start today and many are speculating that he may be part of a package for a front-line starting pitcher. Both Lou Marson and Jason Donald are out of today’s lineup as well, though it may not be related to trade talks. Donald has just returned from injury and Marson (catcher) usually rests for day games. Michael Taylor is in the lineup and currently has a base on balls in his only plate appearance.

Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee are the most recently discussed trade targets but sources claim the Jays have no interest in Carrasco. This leaves Lee, the reigning AL Cy Young Winner. According to Jayson Stark of ESPN, three Cleveland Indians scouts, including the club’s director of player personnel, Steve Lubratich, are in Lehigh Valley to watch the Iron Pigs game today. Seems somewhat odd, considering the only rumored trade chip that is now playing is Taylor.

The Phils have also discussed trading Carrasco to the Baltimore Orioles for O’s closer George Sherill but it is unlikely the team would make a trade for a closer prior to attaining the front line starting pitcher they have been seeking.

UPDATE: According to Ken Rosenthal and Paul Morosi of Foxsports.com, “The Phillies are in discussions with the Indians to obtain left-hander Cliff Lee and possibly another player for Class A right-hander Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-hander Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson, according to a major-league source.”

PCPTAKE: This is a very strong package from Philadelphia. With the inclusion of Knapp, the “possibly another player” would have to be a good one, possibly C Victor Martinez.

UPDATE: According to Gordon Edes and Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, “The deal has not been completed, but the Philadelphia Phillies appear on the verge of acquiring left-hander Cliff Lee(notes) from the Cleveland Indians, according to multiple sources Wednesday morning. In return, the Indians would receive right-handed pitching prospects Carlos Carrasco and Jason Knapp and at least two players from a group that includes catcher Lou Marson, shortstop Jason Donald and outfielder Michael Taylor, according to sources.”

Latest Update On Cliff Lee/Roy Halladay

Philly.com is reporting that the Phillies and Jays continue to talk about a deal for Roy Halladay, even quoting J.P. Riccardi as saying (i’m paraphrasing here) that the Phils and Jays are still talking but that they (Phillies) still have not met their needs for Halladay. Meanwhile, Jayson Stark seems to think that both Riccardi and Ruben Amaro are under a tremendous amount of pressure to pull off a deal and he quoted multiple baseball men who believe it will eventually come to fruition. More updates to follow as they become available.

Jim Johnson, Eagles former D-Coordinator, Succumbs to Cancer

Jim Johnson, who coordinated the Eagles defense from 1999-2009, has passed away today. Johnson, who has been battling cancer for some time now, had just recently been replaced as the defensive coordinator by Sean McDermott. Johnson leaves behind quite a legacy. Here are some of his career highlights:

- Former Defensive Coordinator of Notre Dame
- Former 2 year NFL player
- Was a husband, father, and grandfather
- Coached for the Cardinals, Bills, and Colts
- In 10 years as the Eagles defensive coordinator, Johnson’s defense allowed under 17 points in over half his games.
- In 10 years with the Eagles, 26 of his players played in Pro Bowls
- He currently has 5 assistants in either a defensive coordinator or head coach capacities: Sean McDermott, Leslie Frazier, Steve Spagnolo, Jim Harbaugh, and Ron Rivera.

Johnson will surely be missed. Jim Johnson: 1941-2009.

Passing Of A Legend

Pcpsports.com would like to pass it’s condolences on to the friends and family of Jim Johnson, former defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, who lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 68. The Eagles site has an official release, here is an excerpt…

“The Philadelphia Eagles are saddened to announce Jim Johnson has passed away Tuesday afternoon at the age of 68 after a courageous battle with cancer.

A veteran of 22 years as an NFL assistant, Johnson is regarded as one of the top defensive masterminds in National Football League history. Over the last decade, he gained a great deal of praise as the orchestrator of the renowned Eagles defense. His aggressive style kept Philadelphia at or near the top of the NFL in nearly every major defensive category since joining Andy Reid’s staff on January 22, 1999.”

Eagles O-Line Needs to Gel

With Eagles veterans scheduled to report to camp on Wednesday, one of the main areas of cocern for me on the offensive side of the ball is how quickly will the offensive gel.  The birds added pro-bowl tackle Jason Peters from Buffalo and guard Stacey Andrews to a line that at times struggled to protect Donovan McNabb and consistently create running room for Brian Westbrook.

This season, with bigger, more athletic tackles, could the Eagles be primed to run the ball more?  Probably not, but it should be interesting to see how well the guards play with the new tackles.  Especially on the right side where the Andrews brothers have flipped positions. 

On the left side, the Eagles have added Peters, who will be paired with incumbent guard Todd Herramans.  Herramans is one of the smaller guys on the line at 6-6 320 pounds.  How will he pair up with Peters and will the Eagles be able to run the ball to the left side when they need that third and one, late in the fourth quarter.
