Lito Sheppard, traded for a 5th round pick

Lito Sheppard, traded for a 5th round pick

By Mike Gill

The Eagles weird day has taken another twist.  Cornerback Lito Sheppard has been traded to the New York Jets for a 5th round pick in this years draft and as high as a 2nd round pick in next years draft or as low as a fourth round selection.

The Eagles already have 10 draft picks in this years draft, this makes it 11.  I cant see how this helps them or what they plan to do with an extra 4th round pick.  Lets face it, the Eagles completly blew this whole Lito situation.  This guy was a Pro Bowl corner, and the dont grow on trees, they traded him away for a 5th round pick, or a guy who has no gurantee of ever making the team.

Lito…WHOOOOOAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, LITO

Agreed. Dawkins and Sheppard both gone so that leaves Samuel, Mikell, Brown and Hanson as the secondary??? Runyun obviously gone if they sign Andrews and Thomas turned down a deal. This is how they IMPROVE the team?? What’s next? They trade out of the first round again? I don’t see them moving up many spots because there just isn’t that much to trade up for unless they’re looking at Crabtree.

#1 In response to John – I REALLY hope they’re looking at Crabtree.

#2 The entire Lito situation was handled as poorly as possible from start to finish. A year ago, the discussion was Lito for Jammal Brown of the Saints, plus picks. Taking a 5th rounder and a conditional 2010 pick is a long way off from that.

While I am not happy with what they are doing, they obvioulsy have a plan in place here. Lets see what lies ahead.

- Losing B-Dawk is a sentimental loss, he will be missed in the locker room, on the sideline and when they need a boost, but I think Mikel is going to be a great safety.

- Sheldon isnt going to be happy now, they paid Hanson more then he is getting, I assume they are working on a new deal for him. He played great last season as a CB, moving him to SS would really hurt the CB position, unless they think Ikeguanwa can play.

- Stacey Andrews is a fine replacement as a guard to Shawn Andrews IF you trust Shawn is ready, willing and able to play again and play as a RT.

Here is what they need to do next : Derrick Ward or K. Moreno at pick 28 in the draft. Brandon Pettigrew at pick 21. Take Brian Robiskie in Rd 2, then stock pile afew O-linemen and a safety in the middle rounds.

I think they will be fine, younger on the field, more athletic. Mikel will step up and be the leader on D, he has learned from Dawkins, he wont replace him, but he will take that role.

Boldin…..50/50.

Can’t say I disagree with any of that. Might throw in adding Houshmanzadeh or trading up for Crabtree. And would be happy with Wells or Moreno with the second pick in the first round. If we’re not going to swing a trade for Gonzo than Pettigrew becomes a must.
