MENDING A BROKEN ANKLE

13 01 2009

I’ll be the first to tell you that I thought the Eagles had no shot at the playoffs anymore than the Cardinals did about a month and a half ago. Not being an Eagle fan to begin with, there was no way I was jumping on the bandwagon and had firmly and resolutley jumped off of it. No running start, no wavering, taking the plunge and landing on my ego. There was just no way that this was a possibililty. McNabb had been benched (rightly so), they had played like crap against Cincinnati and Washington, the Kolb experiment was a miserable failure and they were dead in the water.

Well, somehere in that stertch of wretched play, they found a cause to play well. They were led by Brian Dawkins and his insane play, by a rejuvenated McNabb and by some well thought out play calling (about time!!). Dawkins, who may be gone at the end of the season is playing like, well, a man who is at the end of the road and wants to go out with a bang. McNabb is playing like he should’ve been playing all along this season and Andy Reid and Marty Mohringweg finally figured out that you don’t HAVE to pass 58 times in a game if you stay with the running game long enough (ask Minnesota). They did some get some major help to even get to the playoffs, so that’s an improbability that cannot even be explained.

Arizona is in the Championship game with some timely errors by Jake Delhomme, good, not great defense, Kurt Warner and a wideout who cannot be stopped with even double teams. Larry Fitzgerald could’ve been in Philly if we all remember, at the beginning of the year, when Anquan Boldin wanted a new contract. Think where the Birds would be now, with arguably the best WR in the NFL right now, but the Birds wouldn’t pony up the cash (now THERE”S a surprise huh?) and he stayed in the desert.

Looking back, if anyone would’ve seen this coming I’d call them a liar. Even the faithful, diehard fans were already figuring who they should take in the draft this year. But here they are, two teams that are one step away from Tampa, incredibly.

Here’s the prediction, throw out the Thanksgiving night massacre and look at the facts. Arizona has a veteran quarteback in Kurt Warner who has a ring and MVP awards, Edgerrin James has been resurrected and is playing like vintage Edgerrin James. Tim Hightower is the X factor and we all know about Fitzgerald. Their defense has played well, but let’s be honest, they’re not Baltimore, so the Eagles should be able to run their offense IF they stay with what got them here, balance.

The Eagles have the better defense and Warner holds the ball too long sometimes. James can get stuffed at the line and Hightower shouldn’t be able to get outside. Offensively Westbrook should be able to get his touches and one or two scores. The X Factor is Jason Avant and being able to get the tough 3rd down catches. Arizona’s secondary is good but doesn’t scare me and shouldn’t scare the Birds either.

Give the edge to the Birds defense and make the reservations for Tampa. Eagles 30 Cards 23. I’ll be taking care of the ankle that I broke jumping off this bandwagon.

OBSERVATIONS FROM A WEEKEND OF WATCHING FOOTBALL

Best pitch man ever?

Best pitch man ever?

By Joe Mitchell

Sports teams have two colors. Green & White. Sliver & Black. Burgundy & Gold.

It is one of the basic principles of sport.

Someone please explain the Tennessee Titans. Their two colors seem to be Blue & Blue.

Your two colors cannot be different shades of the same color. Duh.

I don’t know if Peyton Manning is the best quarterback ever. He may be.

But he is certainly the best athlete pitch man ever. I love his ads. And consequently, I like him. He is genuine and funny without being goofy in his ads. Read the rest of this entry »

NFL Playoffs: In a Doggy Dog World, Bird’s May Triumph

11 01 2009

by Michael DeLucaunderdog

Two more underdogs won on Saturday as both the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals will now compete in the Conference Championship games for a chance to head to the Super Bowl.  This year’s media (and bettor) darlings, the Panthers and Colts are both gone, as predicted by yours truly.

The Arizona Cardinals 33 to 13 drubbing of the Carolina Panthers insured one thing…that the winner of today’s matchup between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles will be heading to the Super Bowl.  Arizona’s had an impressive two week run, but neither the Falcons nor the Panthers measure up to the Giants or Eagles, both of whom have already defeated Arizona once this year. I Got the Burrell Blues

Burrell will be missed by many in the City of Philadelphia. He is now a Tampa Bay Ray.

Burrell will be missed by many in the City of Philadelphia. He is now a Tampa Bay Ray.

By Joe Mitchell

I’ll miss Pat Burrell. He was a Phillie.

He was a guy like Tony Taylor or Bob Boone. Not a great player. But a good solid player. And he was ours.

Plus Pat didn’t complain. He wasn’t always treated well by the fans, but he seemed to think they were entitled to their opinions.

And he always appeared to like being here. He lived in the city and was often seen around town. Not like Scott Rolen, or the guy drafted number 1 the year before him, J.D. Drew.

We all understand the economics of sports. We may not like it, but we understand it.

It was obvious that Pat was probably moving on. Maybe this would be his chance to cash in on free agency. Who could blame him?

That’s why Pat’s final swing as a Philly was so sweet. Any other day of the year and that ball in game 5 was way way out. As it was, it led to the World Series winning run. Read the rest of this entry »

Phils’ Romero Suspended 50 Games

6 01 2009

by Michael DeLucaromero

Major League Baseball will announce a 50 game suspension of Philadelphia Phillies left handed reliever JC Romero later today.  Romero tested positive for the use of an over the counter supplement which had previously been approved by the league.  The supplement taken is believed to be 6-OXO Extreme manufactured by ErgoPharm, which Romero purchased at a GNC store in Cherry Hill, N.J. on July 22, 2008. On Nov. 21, the union sent a letter to the players stating, “We have previously told you there is no reason to believe a supplement bought at a U.S. based retail store could cause you to test positive under our Drug Program. That is no longer true. We have recently learned of three substances which can be bought over the counter at stores in the United States that will cause you to test positive. These three supplements were purchased at a GNC and Vitamin Shoppe in the U.S.” Read the rest of this entry »

Eagles Soar To Divisional Round – Quick Hits

5 01 2009

by Michael DeLucavinylmagnet-eagles

-Donovan McNabb impressed me with his mobility and escapability on several plays throughout the game.  I was, however, disappointed that he didn’t turn some of those scrambles into positive gains.  Even the most immobile of quarterbacks take off for a four or five yard gain every now and then.

-My timing couldn’t have been more perfect as just before the Eagle’s big play I had exclaimed “Where the hell is the screen pass!”  I remember a time not so long ago when the Eagles would run a screen on every third play (obvious exaggeration) and I’m pretty sure we had some pretty good success with that approach.   I would have liked to have seen more screens and less runs directly at Kevin Williams.

-Brent Celek played a better game yesterday than L.J. Smith ever has.  Celek had 6 receptions for 56 yards.  More importantly, he didn’t drop a single pass  and managed to hold on to a screen pass in which he took a vicous hit that coincided with the reception.

-Sheldon Brown has been fantastic in coverage and is a beast when it comes to tackling…but it sure would be nice if he could catch just one gimme interception.

-What in the world was Brad Childress doing declining the holding penalty in the first quarter that set the Eagles up for the first 3 points of the game.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, he’s the worst coach in the game.  Six guys have already been fired that I’d much prefer having on my sideline.
