New Park at Citizens Bank Park

Will Park be a starter or out of the pen.

Will Park be a starter or out of the pen.

The Phillies off season additions continued today as the team just confirmed they have signed former Dodger Chan Ho Park.  Park was 4-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 54 appearances with the Dodgers (5 starts).

Here is something to look into however.  Park was quoted in the Korean Times as saying, “I was a little worried about the Citizen Bank Park, the home of the Phillies, which is hitter-friendly, but as they considered me as a starter, I signed with Philadelphia.”

Are the Phillies really considering Park as a starter?  If so, does that mean that Jamie Moyer is off the radar?  And if he is a starter, does that mean that JA Happ will be with the team and become the teams number five starter?

Overall, I figured that the move was made to replace Rudy Suaenz, but it is a one-year, $2.5 million deal that could become $5 million if he reaches certain goals.  So you can read that contract a couple of different ways.

1) That’s a decent enough contact to be a back-of-the-rotation starter.  Read the rest of this entry »

Cheeks the Right Guy to Go…For Now

13 12 2008

By Mike Gill

The Sixers finally decided enough was enough.

GM Ed Stefanski pulled the plug on the Mo Cheeks era, ending an up-and-down run in the city he helped win the 1983 NBA Title.

However, Cheeks was never really beloved by the fans, like Larry Bowa was with the Phillies.  Neither in my opinion was a very good coach or manager, but their tiles to titles in the city seemed to give them a free pass when times were tough.

Stefanski had to make a move, after adding piece-after-piece this off season.  Expectations were high for the Sixers, especially after a unexpected run into the playoffs last season.  But the one move that Stefanski didn’t make this off season was to hire a new coach and it could cost his high-priced team a shot at the playoffs.

This season got off to a rough start and the young Sixers have never seemed to get going under Cheeks, who as one Sixer insider told me, “If you give Mo 35 win talent, he will win you 35 games.”

Maybe last year he won more games then he should have or maybe the team was good enough to win with their running style that it didn’t matter that his X’s and O’s were subpar. Read the rest of this entry »

Phils Ink Ibanez

12 12 2008

The following is from Phillies.com

The left-handed-hitting portion of the Phillies batting order, already quite imposing, is likely to become more formidable in 2009 and beyond.

The World Series champions have replaced the power of Pat Burrell with the more consistent — and completely left-handed — swing of free agent Raul Ibanez.

A report on ESPN.com and FOXSports.com on Friday said the Phillies have agreed to a three-year contract with Ibanez, pending his passing a physical examination. The contract, the report said, is believed to be worth $30 million.

Ibanez, 36, is to become the Phillies’ every-day left fielder, His presence eliminates the chance of Burrell, also a free agent, returning. He had drawn interest from a number of clubs — the Mets, Cubs, Angels and Braves among them.

But, as ESPN reports, he had sent signals through friends that the Phillies were his first choice. The Phillies intensified their effort to sign him Thursday after they learned the Angels had been negotiating with Ibanez to serve as a left-handed run producer should Mark Teixeira sign elsewhere.

Ibanez played the past five seasons with the Mariners. There he had become a favorite of Pat Gillick who became the Phillies general manager and who now is serving as a consultant for the Phillies.

He batted .293 with 23 home runs, 110 RBIs, a .358 on-base percentage and a .472 slugging percentage in 2008.

Burrell, the Phillies’ biggest right-handed power threat, averaged 30-plus homers a year for the past four seasons.

During last season’s World Series run, Burrell hit 33 homers with 86 RBIs in 157 games. He added three more homers during the postseason.

Phils Looking To Sign Park?

12 12 2008

The Phillies appear to be nearing a deal with right-hander Chan Ho Park, according to Yahoo Sports.

Park is 35 years of age. In 2008, he went 4-4 with a 3.40 ERA over 95 2/3 innings. He started only 5 games last year for the Dodgers.

Phillies new GM, Ruben Amaro Jr. confirmed that he’s talking with Park, who most likley would be used in middle-inning relief and to spot start. Amaro gave no indication on the progress of those talks however..

Figgins a Philly?

In the ever changing world that is the Winter Meetings, where news can literally be updated from minute to minute, is it possible that the end game in the Jake Peavy trade drama could be a three way deal involving the Padres, Angels, and the Phillies, with Chone Figgins heading to the City of Brotherly Love?  The latest word out of Vegas has the Angels as the new frontrunner in the Peavy sweepstakes.  Assuming that a third team would still be required to return a starting pitcher to the Padres, the Phils could have a legit shot at landing the Angel’s uber utility player with either Read the rest of this entry »

Do Eagles Fans Still Want Chad?

11 12 2008

By Mike Gill

All off season long, Eagles fans yelled and cried for the Birds to go get wide receiver Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson.  Now 15 weeks into this NFL season, it seems that Johnson again could be on the market when this miserable season for the Bungals comes to a close.

My question for the Eagles fans is…Would you still want to sign Chad?

While his 2008 season has been one to forget, Johnson has just 50 catches for 507 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Keep in mind those numbers would place him second on the Eagles in terms of catches, yards and he would lead all Eagle wide outs in touchdown grabs.

Johnson is just 30 years of age and has captured all of these Bengals records:

  • Most receiving yards in a season (1,440)
  • Most receiving yards all-time
  • Most receiving touchdowns (49)
  • Most receiving yards in a game (260)
  • Most seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards (6)
  • Most touchdown receptions in a game (3, tied with several other players)

So again, do the Eagles fans still want to bring in Chad Johnson?  Read the rest of this entry »

Mets Get Another Closer

Putz will pitch the 8th inning in front of K-Rod

By Mike Gill
(From ESPN.COM)

The New York Mets overhauled their much-maligned bullpen with two big moves Wednesday, obtaining J.J. Putz from Seattle as part of a three-team, 12-player trade that gives them a setup man for new closer Francisco Rodriguez.

Hours after completing a $37 million, three-year contract with Rodriguez, New York dealt seven players — six to the Mariners and one to Cleveland — to get three back in a huge swap at the winter meetings.

“All I kept on hearing in the streets of New York when you go get bagels in the morning was, ‘Omar, please address the bullpen,’” Mets general manager Omar Minaya said. “Well, to all you Mets fans, we’ve addressed the bullpen.”

New York shipped reliever Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez, lefty Jason Vargas and three minor leaguers to the Mariners for Putz, center fielder Jeremy Reed and reliever Sean Green in the first trade by new Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik. Read the rest of this entry »

Phillies Acquire Catcher, Other Stuff Brewing

10 12 2008

Aside from the minor trade the Phils made for Ronny Paulino, here is what else is happening at the meetings:

1.) Phils are willing to eat 8 million of the 9 million owed to Adam Eaton to trade him and want NOTHING in return. Interesting to see if there’s any takers.

2.) Appears the Phils are fielding offers for Chris Coste as well.

3.) It appears likely that Kyle Kendrick will be traded in the next few weeks, according to sources in the organization.

4.) Peavy three way talks are alive but quiet at the moment.

5.) Phils are interested in Scott Hairston of the Padres as a LF option.

Catcher Ronny Paulino was acquired by the Phillies from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for catcher Jason Jaramillo, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. announced today.
