Duke’s Ramblings

24 11 2008

by Michael DeLucaEagles Reid Football

Some random thoughts regarding the weekend’s sports.

1.  I’m an Eagle fan, but was thrilled to see them get throttled.  I was even kind of pissed that Demps returned the kickoff.  No matter how attached Lurie is to Reid, a shutout would have to at least get us a step closer to getting the fat man out of here.  The final straw for me was last week’s decision to play for a tie by punting on fourth and one with just a minute and a half remaining in overtime.  I will now root for the Eagles to get continuously pounded until a change is made. Duke’s Picks: Week 12

22 11 2008

by Michael DeLuca

It’s once again time for the best picks on the planet…or at least the cheapest. Home teams are in caps, Duke’s Picks are in bold.

DALLAS COWBOYS -11.5 San Francisco 49ers – So let me get this straight; Cowboys play one decent game, in which they score just 14 points, and suddenly their 11.5 point favorites?  I’ll take Shaun Hill, Mike Singletary, and the points thank you.  Might even be worth a shot on the money line as well, Frisco could win this one outright.

New York Giants – 3.5 ARIZONA CARDINALS – Giants may be the best team in the league, but the Cardinals are 4-0 at home and have the firepower to defeat the defending Super Bowl Champions.  If you’re going to beat the G-Men, you have to do it through the air.  Warner, Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston should be able to get the job done.  Further enforcing this selection is the fact that both Plaxico Burress and Brandon Jacobs are dinged up.

Washington Redskins -3.5 SEATTLE SEAHAWKS – In case you haven’t noticed, I love taking three and a half point spreads.  They’re the best bet in professional sports.  Hasselbeck looked rusty coming off a five game layoff last week.  Look for him to be much more efficient this week and for Seattle to keep this game competetive in their attempt to ruin coach Zorn and RB Shaun Alexander’s return to Seattle.

Week 12 NFL Picks

22 11 2008

By Tom Peters

Last week wasn’t as terrible as I thought it would be. A tie game can really throw a wrinkle in your picks, but the damages was minimal. Last week I went 10 – 5 – 1, bringing the season record to a robust 102 – 57 - 1.

For the first time this season, I picked the Thursday night game correctly and I get to start off the week with a chance for that perfect week.

Let’s get it started, I have company coming for the daughter’s 3rd birthday party and it’s now or never. Family members are tough to ignore, no matter how hard you try. Read the rest of this entry »

Thursday’s Night NFL Pick

20 11 2008

It’s my daughter’s 3rd birthday today and I have to post this real quick. Thankfully, there isn’t much of a game to analyze. Of course I dno’t know if I’d trsut my pick since I haven’t gotten a Thursday night game right yet.

Cincinnati Bengals (1-8-1) v. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3)

Cincy is coming off the moral victory last week against the Eagles, but they weren’t the same Eagles that beat Pittsburgh earlier in the season. I expect the Steelers to cause a lot of turnovers and a lot of havoc for Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bengal offense.

MY PICK: Steelers (although two ties would be cool)

MY DAUGHTER’S PICK: Bengals (she thinks Tigers are cute, she hasn’t seen Ocho Cinco)

2003-2004 Draft’s Have Crippled the Birds

19 11 2008

By Mike Gill

Following the Eagles 13-13 tie with the now 1-8-1 Cincinnati Benglas, fans all around the Delaware Valley have been searching for answers.  They want to know what happened to the Birds.  As I have stated before, a lot of this mess starts with the draft, but take a closer look at those draft classes and you really find where a huge problem lies – The 2003 and 2004 draft classes.

Andrews is the only player left from the 2004 draft.

Andrews is the only player left from the 2004 draft.

These players are now coming into their primes, they are four-and-five year players now.  The problem is, out of the 16 players the Eagles selected, only two of them are still on the team, one of which is injured.

That’s right 16 selected players and LJ Smith and Shawn Andrews are the only two players that still are on the team.  Smith has been public enemy number one for most of his career as the Birds tight end, while Andrews has battled depression and a back injury that has forced him to miss most of the season.

In fact an even closer look at Read the rest of this entry »

Eagles Must Start Over, or…

How much longer can this marriage last?

How much longer can this marriage last?

By Mike Gill

As I decide on my feelings towards the football team in Philadelphia right now, so many things are running through my head.

  • Would the Eagles be better off with Donovan McNabb and a new coaching staff?  The thought of McNabb with a completely different philosophy is an interesting one.  If you think Donovan can still play, this is something you might consider.  While he did not play a good game at all on Sunday vs. the Bengals, I do think he can still play.  However, it is simply not fair to ask him to throw the ball 58 times with these wide-outs, the worst tight-end in football and no running Read the rest of this entry »
