Could Holliday be landing in Philly ?
By Mike Gill
Could Christmas be coming early to Philadelphia this season?
According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Phillies could be looking to spread some off-season cheer a little early to their fans by adding Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday.
The next question here is what would it take to get Holliday from the Rockies. The question this off-season will now be are Phillies fans willing to mortgage the future for another World Series, or now that they have one, be more patience with the pieces they already have instead of jumping at the chance to have a one-year rental like Holliday.
With the said, lets start with Carlos Carrasco. He is still a high prospect for the Phillies, but will he pitch at the big league level in 2009? Not at the start of the season, so would you be willing to send him to Colorado with say J.A. Happ in exchange for a guy who will probably bolt after 2009 – I wouldn’t.
Next there is Lou Marson, the catcher is one of the better catching prospects to come around and the Phillies have Carlos Ruiz, but he is 30, but are the Phillies ready to hand the starting catching job to Marson – not likely. But do you have enough trust in the Ruiz/Coste combo to deal off Marson for Holliday? I am not sure I would.
Finally there is Jason Donald, the top shortstop in the Phillies organization who could possibly play thrid-base. He could be an attractive piece for the Phillies to deal with Jimmy Rollins in place for a very cheap price. However, Donald himself will not net the Phillies Holliday, they would have to package together at least another player to get the Rockies to blink.
This is a tricky off-season for the Phillies and their fan base. Do they want to take a chance and go for another World Series in 2009 or now that they have won their title, are they more apt to wait and let the future Phillies bring one home in say 2012…
That’s for Ruben Amaro Jr. to decide.
