Could Rowand and Rollins be re-united again ?
By Mike Gill
Would the Phillies deal Jimmy Rollins?
According to a story by Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News , the Phillies could listen to offers for Rollins. And why shouldn’t they ?
The former MVP did not have a good year and the Phillies could decide to strike while the iron is hot. While I think Jimmy still has a good season or so left him in, another MVP season will never happen. What the Phillies would miss most from Rollins is his gold glove defense. Even when his bat is cold and his strikeouts are high, his play at shortstop is unquestionably the best in the league.
So does this rumor make any sense ?
Consider, one of the Phillies best prospects is shortstop Jason Donald. Donald hit .381 for team USA at the Olympics and could be ready to play in the bigs right now. Secondly, Rollins struggles at the plate weren’t the only strikes against him. He had to be disciplined at least twice this season and there could be a possibility that now that the Phillies have their title, they could turn to profits and discipline over a winning formula, which is a veteran defensive presence at shortstop.
Rollins to San Fran does make some sense, he is from the Bay area, but still, he is a former MVP and a gold glove shortstop and they are hard to find in this game. He also could be one of the most popular Phillies of all-time.
My guess he stays, but the Phillies will explore the possibility of dealing him if the perfect deal comes along.
A non-story. The writer penned “could listen”. In other words, he maded it up. Rollins is signed through 2011 at 8M a year.
That San Jose article is one of the least knowledgeable-homer piece of material I have ever read. It’s nothing but what-if’s with played somehow linked to the Bay Area. Drivel.
He’s not going anywhere. He’s too valuable to the team. When he hits, the rest of the lineup, especially Utley hits.
Crazy. This is the kind of stuff that gives Philly fans a bad name.
Rollins will hit better.
Even if he doesn’t – who else could you get like him for only $8,000,000 without giving up prospects?
If the Phillies even seriously considered this, they should be shipped off to Montreal …
