JR’s Abbreviated Ramblings

4 11 2008

After churning out a solid 2500 word edition of ramblings on Friday this will be a bit shorter than your used to, but fear not. We do have some things to cover, so off we go:

The Mustache Wont Quit, Even If Coach Does

The Mustache Won't Quit, Even If Coach Does

1.) As mentioned in my Friday editions, Ruben Amaro officially became GM of the Phillies, to no one’s surprise. I won’t ramble about how I think it’s a bad decision (it is), but I will say this: hopefully the Phils don;t also lose Chuck LaMar to this move in addition to Mike Arbuckle. He would be a lose in addition to the huge lose of Arbuckle. Word around the camp fire currently persists that after an hour long meeting with David Montgomery, Arbuckle resigned amidst much annoyance from currently employed scouts on the Phils staff. Apparently they were miffed about how Arbuckle was “passed over” in favor of Amaro who has no apparent interest in scouting or player development. Couldn’t agree more. Amaro is nothing more than a Montgomery “yes man” and has little chance of succeeding. Now granted, I won’t root against my favorite team, but I strongly disagree with the hiring and agree with Phils staffers: Arbuckle was passed over and it’s not right. Rumors also persist he will join Dayton Moore in Kansas City, which is good because Moore has done nothing to elicit job security and maybe Arbuckle lands on his feet there as a GM.

2.) Texas lost and I stand corrected. Enough, I don’t want to hear it. I gave you a “i’m dead wrong” admission now let’s move on…..

3.) But keeping in NCAA FB, Penn State, Texas Tech, and Alabama will fight it out (and I still think Penn State has the easier road ahead than the previous two teams who currently sit 1-2 in the BCS) and some other intriguing story lines have emerged: Who will win the ACC and compete in their BCS game? Will WVU win the Big East? Will FAU get their second straight bowl game berth (and should I donate again??) Will Dave Wandstadt’s mustache ever go out of style on him but in style to the viewing public? So many great questions to ponder……

4.) Tons of free agents in baseball filed this past weekend blah blah blah. We will adress that when free agency kicks off. (Side note: Since when as a society did things get so boring in print media and television did we have to cover when free agents filed??? ) Isn’t anything else more worthy of being covered?

5.) Great trade in the NBA yesterday. Iverson moved again (as reported here early on by yours truly) and Chauncey Billups goes home to Denver. Loved the trade for two reasons: 1.) Great sign for the league that teams are trading early and often again when trades almost disappeared a few years ago. Now in a span of 18 months the following players have been traded: KG, Jason Kidd, Iverson, Ray Allen, Shaq, Billups, and so many more. Great time to be a high end real estate agent in NBA cities. 2.) Usually when a trade happens, others get motivated. See: above reference to all the trades in past 18 months.

6.) Titans continue to get it done, and its easy to see why. Watched their game Sunday and realized what most smart NFL people realized long ago : (listen Andy Reid because after 100 meaningless regular season wins the Super Bowl still alludes you because you never caught on to these two obvious points) if you can run the ball with success and eat clock (set up by a good game manager) and stop the run well you usually win games. Passing the ball 50 times and then letting opposing teams offenisve lines treat you like their bi*ch in prison is not an ideal formula. Titans are great and so are the Giants. Looking forward to the Giants-Eagles game next weekend. Will be great, and throw in the fact that it’s my one obligatory game per year that I attend and you have the following math equation: Me + Eagles games + drinking = usually a loss (I swear im bad luck at Eagles games), no work the next day, and lots of yelling at Andy Reid which he will never hear and will instead garner me dirty looks from fathers with their kids. One more quick note on the NFL. Hate to say i told you so, but i told you so. Isn’t it ironic that the same weekend that Daunte Culpepper is welcomed back into the league Byron Leftwich has a great fill in game in Pittsburgh and Brad Johnson is finally placed back on the bench. Repeat after me: They were always better than what you had, you were just being cheap, stupid, or both.

7.) Now on to the Entourage portion. SPOILER ALERT : I don’t know where there going with this, other than director sees Vincent as unmarketable or doesnt like him so he’s cutting all his lines. I personally wish this would be over and they’d move on to the end of movie, next project, etc. I feel like they messed up a very interesting potential plot line, and lost out on good programming in favor of a crappy episode and potentially two or three crappy episodes. Two quick things before we adjourn: 1.) Why Jason Patric? I thought Ed Norton was the lead in this movie? 2.) Loved that “Lombard” from “Office Space” is Ari’s old buddy who now is out in the valley as the opposite-of-Ari non-sharp guy from his past. He just looks like that part. They could’ve have gone with him or that guy from “Prison Break” who’s the old warden hooked on drugs. (Don’t know him or watch that show, but I saw him in a few episodes. The guy who’s the Bank Manager in the beginning of “The Dark Knight” is the same guy. IM

Hey Peter, Whaaaaats Happening? Yes, thats Gary Cole in Entourage!
