Week 13 NFL Picks

29 11 2008

by Tom Peters

I did not do so well in my selections last week. My bad case of overestimitis and underestimitosis led me to a mediocre 9 – 7, bringing my season record to 111 - 64 – 1, not bad for a bowling league.

My thanksgiving games were brought to you my the singer Meat Loaf. I won’t be sad cause two out of three ain’t bad.

I have awoken from my tryptophan induced coma to bring you this weeks picks. So, here we go:

San Francisco 49ers ( 3 – 8 ) v. Buffalo Bills ( 6 – 5 )

The Bills looked impressive in steamrolling the Chiefs last week. Trent Edwards finally looked like the quarterback he should be. The 49ers are going to cold, frigid, windy Buffalo for a 1pm game. West Coast teams still have yet to win an afternoon game on the East Coast. The streak should continue. Face it, the 49ers just aren’t that good.

MY PICK: Bills

Baltimore Ravens ( 7 – 4 ) v. Cincinnati Bengals ( 1 – 9 )

Does anyone really expect the Bengals to have any success against the Ravens defense. We saw what happened when they played the Read the rest of this entry »

Plaxico Burress Shoots Himself

29 11 2008

by Michael DeLuca15_plaxico_lg1

It has been reported by FoxSports.com that New York Giants star receiver Plaxico Burress accdidentally shot himself in the leg last night while at a nightclub.  Burress spent the night at a hospital and the injury is not life threatening.

After helping to lead the Giants to a successful and remarkable Super Bowl Championship victory last season, Burress signed a five-year, $35 million contract just prior to the start of the Giants first game of the 08′ season.

It was believed that Burress’ most embarrassing and perhaps “stupidest” moment was already in his past. In week four of his rookie season, while with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Burress caught a pass and then spiked the live football! The ball traveled backwards and was recovered by the Jacksonville Jaguars. I’d have to say he’s found a remarkably inventive way to top that gaffe.

Phillies About to Strike In Free Agency

29 11 2008

by John Ryan

While the 2009 free agency period has now rolled on for around 3 weeks, the Phillies have yet to make a move other than to trade a top minor leaguer (Greg Golson) who disappointed for someone else’s disappointment (Mayberry, Jr.) and sign an expected minor league helper (Mike Koplove).  With that being said, there are some interesting names floating around the Phillies these days, some in trades others in free agency.  Let’s run down some of the names being tossed around and I’ll give my forecast on whether they will land in Philadelphia anytime this year.  Also, I’ll throw in some possibilities that I’ve thought would be a good fit either now or in the past.   Keep in mind, my picks are Read the rest of this entry »

Reid To Coach 49ers?

28 11 2008

by John Ryan

In what has become a foregone conclusion for frustrated Eagles fans in the area, Andy Reid is on his way out. What they fail to realize, though, is that Reid may leave on his own. According to much speculation (and that’s all it is at this point), Mike Holmgren will be offered the job of GM in San Francisco and he will offer the head coach job to Andy Reid. This scenario makes sense on many levels. First of all, Mike Holmgren was an assistant under Bill Walsh in San Francisco before he left to become head coach at Green Bay. When he did leave, he took an intern from San Fran who become his quarterback coach at Green Bay. Still not sure who that guy is? Well, Andy Reid of course. Holmgren has often been quoted as saying San Fran would be a desirable landing spot from him, and the move wouldn’t be all that bad. He’s already out west in Seattle. The 49ers now need a new coach (assuming they don’t bring back Singletary) and will need a GM to clean up the mess it has become since the York’s took over for Eddie DeBartolo, Jr. The 49ers, with a few aberration years thrown in, have never succeeded under the current salary cap structure and have made foolish choice after foolish choice for what seems like an eternity.

Again, this is all speculation at this point, but Reid and Holmgren are very close friends, and it would seem to reason that if Reid ever were to relinquish duties to anyone it would be Holmgren. And, he could also have a big say on personnel. Holmgren could serve in a role similar to Bill Parcells in Miami, and Reid is still relatively young enough to handle all of the heavy lifting.

Phillies Add Koplove

28 11 2008

From Phillies.com

The Phillies aren’t resting on their World Series accomplishments. In a move that could eventually add depth to their 2009 bullpen, the Phils have agreed to terms with veteran reliever Mike Koplove, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
Citing two sources familiar with the situation who confirmed the agreement, the Daily News said Koplove is likely to wind up at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, but will have an invitation to be in Clearwater, Fla., with the Major League club for Spring Training.

Koplove spent last season in the Dodgers’ system, going 2-1 with a 3.46 ERA for Triple-A Las Vegas.

Last year, the Phils made a relatively unheralded bullpen move in signing Chad Durbin, and Durbin wound up being a key factor in Philadelphia’s run to a World Series title. Koplove, 32, has only seven Major League appearances since 2005, but has pitched 254 2/3 innings in his career.

NFL Thanksgiving Picks

26 11 2008

By Tom Peters

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope your turkey is more enjoyable than the games the NFL has selected for you today.  In my 29 years on Earth I have never been less excited about Thanksgiving football.

Anyway, here are the picks for this year’s edition of Thanksgiving Football:

Tennessee Titans (10 – 1) v. Detroit Lions (0 – 11)

Ironically enough, this is not the first time the Lions will be winless on Thanksgiving. It won’t probably be the last. But i digress. The Titans are pissed after Read the rest of this entry »

Philly Fans: SHUT UP!!!!

24 11 2008

By Tom Peters

To the Eagles Fans:

You wanted Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb to leave town. You’ve made them more unpopular that the current President. You got tired of seeing the Eagles flounder game after game and loss and tie after loss. You wanted this to be Donovan McNabb’s last season.

Well, you got what you wished for. Kevin Kolb, the former Houston Cougar. McNabb was 8-18 for 59 yards. Kolb was 10-23 for 73 yards with 2 INTs, one of which was returned for a TD because David Akers is a better tackler than Kolb. If I recall, he was ineffective as his fellow NFL alumni (David Klingler & Andre Ware), and they broke NCAA records.

You wanted to see someone other than #5 (whose number will be retired in a few years) behind center. You don’t need that quarterback taking you to four straight NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl. Anyone can throw to those talented receivers. A different quarterback could make Brian Westbrook healthy again.

For the first time in four years, Andy Reid gave you what you wanted. Just remember the old Joni Mitchell song “Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got til it’s gone, they paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”

If McNabb were a Viking, he’d be a division leader at 8-3 and you’d really be sorry.

Now that you’ve seen a glimpse into the ghost of Eagles future, shut up!!!! You should be satisfied with one championship this year. Everything else is just gravy.

PS: I will officially add Andy Reid on my list of coaches to be fired for benching McNabb and giving you what you want.

Kevin “Corn On The” Kolb Ushering Out the McNabb Era: A Ramblings Extravaganza!

24 11 2008

by John Ryankolb

Did you really think on a huge weekend like the one that just passed that JR would wait until Tuesday for his ramblings when 1.) I just spoke about myself in the 3rd person 2.) My editor spewed out his ramblings and 3.) The Donovan McNabb Era is about to be replaced by a young “gunslinger” from Texas. I knew you didn’t think I’d wait. Away we go!

1.) Since we have several themes running through this weekend, no better place to start (and later finish) than with ERA changing. A new ERA has emerged Read the rest of this entry »
