NFL: Waiver Wire Wonders

Fantasy Leagues are won and lost with waiver wire pick ups. Sure the draft is of importance, but picking up a stud rb or superstar wideout that would have been worthy of an early round pick can make all the difference in the world. For example, in 2007, Derek Anderson, Ryan Grant, Earnest Graham, and Roddy White were universally picked up off the waiver wire. In 2006, Marion Barber, Selvin Young, and Marques Colston led many teams to victory. So who are the waiver wire wonders for 2008? Here are your best options for week 7 of the NFL season:

QB-
Brad Johnson, Dallas Cowboys – I shouldn’t need to tell you this. He’s universally available on waiver wires, has been inserted to one of the most potent offesnses in football, and they’ve just add WR Roy Williams to boot.

RB-
Dominic Rhodes, Indianapolis Colts – Joseph Addai is out 2 to 4 weeks with a hamstring injury. 3rd string back, rookie Mike Hart, will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right knee. This job is all Dominic’s! Expect Rhodes to see exclusive carries through the next 3-4 weeks and be involved in a timeshare with Addai once he returns, hamstring injuries can linger.

Cedric Benson, Cincinatti Bengals – Chris Perry was already close to getting benched in favor of Benson, now he’s got a shoulder injury to boot. Benson should get his shot at primary back carries this week and if he can produce, he’ll start for the remainder of the season.

WR-
Mike Furrey, Detroit Lions – The recent trade of Roy Williams has many rushing to the waiver wire to pick up Shaun McDonald, but my guess is that it will be Furrey that will be elevated back to the #2 spot in Detroit and McDonald will remain in the slot. The last time Furrey held down the x receiver spot (2006), he managed 98 catches for 1068 yards and 6 touchdowns. If you’re in a PPR league, make your claim NOW.

Donnie Avery, St. Louis Rams – The offense is getting on track and it’s become obvious that Avery will be a part of it. With constant double teams on Torry Holt, Avery will have some big games down the stretch.

TE-
Dustin Keller, New York Jets – Keller has 6 receptions on the season. Two of them are touchdowns. Last week, a touchdown to Keller was taken off the board due to penalty. The rookie from Purdue has obviously become one of Brett Favre’s favorite red zone targets. His receptions should increase as the season wears on. If you’re in a scoring league, grab Keller now. If you’re in a PPR, it might be best to hold off.
