NFL Trade Deadline

14 10 2008

by Michael DeLuca

At the NBA and MLB trade deadlines there’s always tons of excitement; big rumors, last second deals, role-playing puzzle pieces moving to and fro. In the NFL, not so much. The time is currently 2:25. There is one hour and thirty five minutes until the NFL trade deadline of 4:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and absolutely nothing has transpired.

As I had mentioned a couple weeks ago, I’d like to see Tony Gonzalez in a Philadelphia Eagles uniform. I also speculated that it would probably take just a fourth round pick. Since then, Gonzalez has asked for a trade. The Eagles, Giants, and Bills have emerged as the most likely suitors for his services. The Chiefs, reportedly, are seeking a third round pick…which as we all know, means a fourth rounder would get it done.

Along with the Chiefs, the Detroit Lions are reportedly shopping many of their veterans. Though history tells us to expect nothing in the next hour and a half, I’m going to keep my fingers crossed. I’ll update continuously up to and after the deadline, where most likely I’ll have Seinfeld-esque blogs about nothing.  (Refresh browser for updates)

3:15 p.m. UPDATE – nothing

3:30 p.m. UPDATE – nothing

3:36 p.m. UPDATE – according to ESPN’s Ed Werder, trade talks are heating up between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions regarding receiver Roy Williams

3:45 p.m. UPDATE – the Eagles did make a formal offer to the Chiefs, it is not believed to be enough

3:59 p.m. UPDATE - the Cowboys may have snuck in a deal for Roy Williams before the deadline, details to come

4:04 p.m. UPDATE - Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that Roy Williams was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Dallas Cowboys for at least “one first round draft choice.”  Williams is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of this year, Schefter adds “would not make this deal unless they thought they could get Williams signed to a long term extension.”  Schefter has also reported that the Redskins have signed 2006 league MVP, RB Shaun Alexander.

4:16 p.m. UPDATE – Williams trade was for a 1st, 3rd, and 6th.

4:31 p.m. UPDATE - Eagles and Packers were willing to give up third rounders for Tony G.  Can’t fault either of them for not giving up a second round pick.  King Carl in KC is just an ass, a third rounder is more than fair for a 32 year old tight end.

4:47 p.m. UPDATE – The Cowboys got a 7th rounder back from Detroit in the trade.

6:00 p.m. UPDATE – The Colts quietly add DT John McCargo from the Buffalo Bills for an undisclosed draft pick.  This is a nice addition for a Colts team that desperately needs run support and has lost it’s top two defensive tackles.

6:18 p.m. UPDATE – Adam Schefter reports that the Colts gave up a 4th round pick for McCargo.
