Fantasy Football: Waiver Wire Wonders

Fantasy Leagues are won and lost with waiver wire pick ups.  Sure the draft is of importance, but picking up a stud rb or superstar wideout that would have been worthy of an early round pick can make all the difference in the world.  For example, in 2007, Derek Anderson, Ryan Grant, Earnest Graham, and Roddy White were universally picked up off the waiver wire.  In 2006, Marion Barber, Selvin Young, and Marques Colston led many teams to victory.  So who are the waiver wire wonders for 2008?  Here are your best options for week 5 of the NFL season:

QB-
Marc Bulger – Most likely an antsy owner dropped Bulger upon his demotion last week. He’s back as the starter and will remain so. Scoop him up and reap the benefits.  He’s got a bye this week, so even if you have a low waiver priority you might be able to sneak him through.

JaMarcus Russell – Russell’s got a rifle for an arm, now he just needs a scope since he’s a bit off target. The whole package will come together sometime soon and Russell will be among the league’s top signal callers.

RB-
Cedric Benson – If you didn’t hear, he was picked up by the Bengals. Their run game has struggled mightily and it may not be long before he replaces Chris Perry as the featured back.

Tim Hightower – Many are classifying Hightower simply as a goal line back, it’s simply not true. While Hightower is a beast in short yardage situations, he has also been targeted 13 times in the passing game, with 8 receptions for 84 yards. The Cardinals will continue to increase Hightower’s carries and by season’s end, this could be a timeshare with Hightower getting the goal-line carries. Also, Edge is getting up there in age, one big injury and Hightower becomes a high end #2 back in fantasy.

WR-
Domenik Hixon – With Plaxico Burress suspended, many pugnits are assuiming that Steve Smith will be the breakout candidate to replace him. Hixon, however, will most likely get the starting nod at split end. He’s a workout warrior and the coaches love his dedication to learning his craft. The third year pro currently has six catches for 89 yards, he could match those totals this week against the Seahawks.

Steve Breaston – Boldin was carted off the field last week after an ugly helmet to helmit hit.  He’ll be OK but most likely will be held out of action this week.  Breaston will be the most likely beneficiary and even when Boldin returns is a nice #3 WR option out of the slot with Arizona’s pass heavy offense.

Lance Moore – Say hello to the next Steve Smith (the Panthers one).  Moore has quickly become Drew Brees favorite target and has earned the starting nod over veteran David Patten.  With Marques Colston out, Moore will continue to be the featured receiver and may remain in the starting lineup once Colston is back.

Picked up waiver wonder Dominick Davis 5 years ago and he carried my team on his rookie shoulders. He’d be a great “where are they now” puff piece on Fox Sports or ESPN OTL.

Well, first of all, you’d have to look up Dominick Williams (I think), since he’s one of those wierdos that changed his name.
