Phillies Say Goodbye to Two Players

31 10 2008

By Mike Gill

The Phillies had a party then handed out the pink slips.  Right after the parade was finished, Phillies former general manager Pat Gillick made his final move by releasing outfielder So Taguchi and pitcher Tom Gordon.

Gordon should be thanked as he is shown the door.  He was brought in to replace Billy Wagner, but injuries casued him to be ineffective at times and he is the main reason why Brad Lidge is here today.  He did have some good moments.  He was steller during the first half of his first season.  But he broke down and the Phillies could not fill his shoes.  Last season once Gordon went down, the Phillies turned to Brett Myers to close games.  This year they went and got Lidge and moved Myers back into the rotation, leaving Gordon as the set-up man.  But injuries again ended his season and now he is no longer a Phillie. NFL Week 9: The Duke’s Picks

31 10 2008

by Michael DeLuca

That’s right, another winning week for the Duke in week 8!  That brings the season record to 30-22 against the spread with seven winning weeks out of eight.  Last week, I told you the Browns would beat the Jags straight up, let you know that the Giants would beat the Santonio “Panama Red Zone” Holmesless Steelers, and that Tennessee would solidify their #1 Power Ranking with a big Monday Night victory against the Colts.  So, once again, forget calling that 1-900 number and pulling out your credit card.  Brandon Lang’s got The Duke’s Picks bookmarked at this point.  Here come the best picks on the planet…or at least the cheapest. Home teams are in caps, Duke’s Picks are in bold.

CLEVELAND BROWNS -2 Baltimore Ravens – I’ve been riding the Browns bandwagon for several weeks now and it’s been paying off.  Their defense is much improved from last season.  Shaun Rodgers has been a huge addition, both literally and figuratively.  Expect a close one, you’ll probably be walking away with a one point victory against the spread.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS -4.5 Houston Texans – Houston is beginning to look like I thought they might when the season began.  Unfortunately, a week one snoozer with the Steelers threw them for a loop, but they’re back on track and Minnesota isn’t blowing anybody away. Read the rest of this entry »

LIGHTS OUT ON THE DROUGHT!

30 10 2008

By Mike Gill

Its been 25 years, but boy was it worth the wait.

Brad Lidge struck out Eric Hinske to end the 2008 World Series, just like Tug McGraw struck out Willie Wilson to end the 1980 World Series.

So much to say, so much to remember, so much to think about – all too surreal to do right now.  So take a look at the sights and the sounds from this memorable night at the Bank and in South Philly.  Read the rest of this entry »

Charles Barkley Quotes

29 10 2008

by MIchael DeLuca

He entered the league as “The Round Mound of Rebound” and left as “Sir Charles.”  In 1993 he was the NBA’s Most Valuable Player and in 2006, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  Yet, despite all of his on court exploits, it’s his off-court antics that have entertained us the most.  With the NBA season tipping off last night and Barkley resuming his role as TNT’s “Most Colorful” Commentator, what better time than to make a top 20 list of my favorite Charles Barkley quotes.

20. Ernie: “Auburn is a pretty good school. To graduate from there I suppose you really need to work hard and put forth maximum effort.”
Charles: “20 points and 10 rebounds will get you through also!”

19. “I think that the team that wins game five will win the series. Unless we lose game five.”

18. The goal of the ’92 Olympic Dream Team when playing Panama: “To get the Canal back.”

17. After throwing a guy through a 1st floor window in a bar fight, Charles in court…
Judge: “Your sanctions are community service and a fine, do you have any regrets?”
Charles: “Yeah I regret we weren’t on a higher floor”

16. “My family got all over me because they said Bush is only for the rich people. Then I reminded them, ‘Hey, I’m rich’.”

15. “These are my new shoes. They’re good shoes. They won’t make you rich like me, they won’t make you rebound like me, they definitely won’t make you handsome like me. They’ll only make you have shoes like me. That’s it.” Read the rest of this entry »

Stinging in the Rain: JR’s Weekend Ramblings (Raincoats NOT included)

28 10 2008

by John Ryan

Quick note before I puke my weekend thoughts onto this blog for your reading pleasure. I think we would all agree that Tuesday is a far better day for me to publish this weekly column due to me being able to cover the WHOLE NFL weekend, and not short change the dozen or so loyal readers I have. With that being said, off we go:

1.) I know I usually work forwards, but I must start with last night first, Since I’m a Phillies fan, i’ll provide a few points, and leave it at that. Just know that I am bitter. 1.) As many of my tri-state brethren prepare to jump off the bridge (Ben Franklin or the Walter, the choice is yours) I want it to be known that I don’t think this is a horrible thing. Yes, Hamels only threw 75 pitches, and yes he was dominant (the runs were a result of the rain, lets be real here), but consider this: His spot in the order was coming up in the bottom of the 6th in a 2-2 tie in the world series. Would Manuel had left him in anyways? Probably. And it’s fair to dispute that point. But consider this. On Wednesday this game will be finalized and it will start in the bottom of the 6th. The Phillies will bat four more times to the Rays 3, and will go PH, Rollins, Werth to start the 6th. In the seventh, the Phillies can feature ANYONE on their staff not named Hamels to throw against Navarro, Bartlett, PH. Advantage Phillies so far. (Anyone else notice Navarro is a real pest in that lineup?) Next, if we somehow get to game 7, Hamels can and probably will throw. Moyer can maybe throw bullpen if Myers implodes, or he could throw Thursday and Myers could be a pen hand. Just throwing out options, This is the World Series and these sort of tactics are employed sometimes. Too risque? Agree that it can be, but it still puts the Phils in good position to win tomorrow and still have Myers and then Hamels again if they do lose the next 1 and 1/3 games. But let’s be clear here: Selig made a jackass move, as usual. Why did the 6th inning ever even start? Why did the 5th even start for that matter? The world may never know….. Breaking News: GAME FIVE OF THE 2008 WORLD SERIES POSTPONED

28 10 2008

October 28, 2008

PHILADELPHIA – Game Five of the 2008 World Series will not resume tonight due to inclement weather. Game Five is now tentatively scheduled to resume on Wednesday evening at 8:37 p.m. (ET), weather permitting.

Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig said: “While obviously we want to finish Game Five as soon as possible, the forecast for today does not allow for us to continue the game this evening. We are closely monitoring tomorrow’s forecast and will continue to monitor the weather on an hourly basis. We will advise fans as soon as we are able to make any final decisions with respect to tomorrow’s schedule.”

NBA Season Tip Off Power Rankings

28 10 2008

by Michael DeLuca

Preseason commences, cuts are made, stars get injured, and I post ridiculously early rankings.  With the NBA season tipping off tonight, I have ranked each team and provided my projected 2008-2009 record, along with their 2007-2008 record.

1) Los Angeles Lakers – Projection (60 -22) – Last Season (57-25) – A healthy Andrew Bynum along with a younger corps than the Celtics make them the team to beat in the coming season.

2) Boston Celtics – Projection (58-24) – Last Season (66-16) – Defending champs have an aging but spectacular corps.  Expect another step back from Ray Allen.  The losses of Posey and PJ Brown won’t be as significant as many media heads are making them out to be.

3) New Orleans Hornets – Projection (58-24) – Last Season (56-26) – Chris Paul, David West, and Tyson Chandler are three young studs that will keep the Hornets relevant for years to come.

4) Houston Rockets – Projection (57-25) – Last Season (55-27) – Louis Scola got into gear as the year went on and should make significant strides in his sophomore season.  Artest will be a great fit. Read the rest of this entry »
