Brewers Better Make It

25 09 2008

by Ethan Greenberg

It’s the battle for the NL wild card and believe it or not, the Mets and Brewers are neck and neck with each other. Some say the difference maker is Santana, some say it’s Sabathia. Sabathia will pitch on 3 days rest- that’s the difference right? The Mets won’t take any risks with pitching Santana on 3 days rest unless they were hanging on to their playoff chances by a thread. For the Brewers, it’s been some 26 years and waiting. For the giant market Mets, it’s been like 2 years and waiting, and the only thing preventing them from winning the wild card is their blowing of a 7 game lead last September- I mean you really really have to choke to pull something like that off. 2009 Phils’ Outfield

25 09 2008

by Michael DeLuca

As pointed out by Mike Gill in last night’s article, Davey Lopes awkwardly and inadvertently gave us a glimpse into the future plans of the Philadelphia Phillies and their outfield.  Apparently, Pat Burrell isn’t in those plans.  The direction they seem to be heading, which I fully endorse, is to get a quality center-fielder in the offseason, shift Shane Victorino back to right, and move Jayson Werth to left field.  Lopes said as much in his fortuitous statement to Tom McCarthy during his in game interview. Did Anyone Hear Davey Lopes Play The Phillies Hand?

24 09 2008

By Mike Gill

We may have gotten a glimpse into the Phillies future tonight by virtue of what, I can only assume, must have been a slip on Davey Lopes’ part.  While sitting here watching the Phillies game tonight, Tom McCarthy was conducting an interview with first base coach Davey Lopes.  During the interview, Lopes may have let the cat out of the bag regarding the Phillies plans concerning Pat Burrell’s future with the franchise.

While discussing Shane Victorino, Lopes said they were a little disappointed with his center field defense and that they might move him back to right field and play Jason Werth in left field next season.  Then the broadcasters got a little quiet and seemed a bit uncomfortable.

Does this mean Pat Burrell will not be here next season?

Funny as I write this, Burrell just smacked a double, but it’s his inconsistent average and his streaky production that has the Phillies thinking about letting him walk after the season.  Sure Burrell carried this team early in the season, but can he really be counted on when the money is on the line.

Either way, the picture may have become a little clearer regarding his future, thanks to Lopes.

3 Blind Mice With Nowhere to Run

24 09 2008

by John Ryan

With week 3 now in the books in the NFL, it is a lot easier to flesh out the so-called “haves” and “have-nots.” After 21 days we can come to the not so hard to discern conclusion that Detroit, St. Louis, and Kansas City are the three worst teams in the NFL. Each is bad for different reasons, but all seem to hold a few common similarities. In my humble order, I say Kansas City has the best chance at getting good again the soonest, followed by Detroit, and St. Louis brings up the rear. First, let’s go from worst to first in this unceremonious pecking order to flesh out problems and solutions for these teams. Read the rest of this entry »

Breaking News: Omar Minaya Gets 4-Year Extension from Mets

24 09 2008

by John Ryan

In a move certain to stir the pot even more in the New York area, New York Mets GM Omar Minaya received a four year extension today to continue in his post, despite the fact that the Mets had the biggest collapse in baseball history last year (losing a 7 game lead in the last 17 days of the season) under his watchful eye, and that the Mets have still not secured a playoff berth in the 2008 tournament. In a week where the NFL’s New York Jets got walloped and Kellen Clemens filled in for an injured Brett Favre at the end of regulation and Yankee stadium shut its hallowed doors for the first time in 85 years amidst Hank Steinbrenner taking pot shots at Joe Torre and the current wild card system, this just adds to the intrigue. Oh yeah, Plaxico Burress of the New York football Giants was also suspended today for insubordination. Start spreading the news… Read the rest of this entry »

Plaxico Burress Suspended!

24 09 2008

The New York Giants have suspended superstar wide receiver Plaxico Burress for two weeks.  With a week 4 bye, Burress will miss just one game, the Oct. 5 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.  Burress will be allowed to return to the team on Oct. 6, the day following the Seahawks matchup.

FOXSports.com’s Jay Glazer reports that Burress failed to show up for work on both Monday and Tuesday and did not respond to numerous phone calls from team officials. Burress, who was just rewarded with a hefty new contract extension making him one of the highest paid players at his position, supposedly met with team officials earlier this morning to attempt to justify his absence. Apparently, Tom Coughlin wasn’t satisfied with the excuse and informed both Burress and the team of the suspension following the meeting.

Intervention needed. In a hurry!

Several NFL teams have gotten off to brutal starts and have fans wondering how can this be?

For those 0-3 franchises (and 1-2 near misses), their faithful followers are thinking that the team brain trusts have had all off-season, pre-season, and this is the result?

Queen City fans may have it the worst. An off-season of shame, bizarro name changes, and a desperation rehire all have the fans and players reeling. Cero and dieciséis is more like a phrase the Bengals ought to get used to, versus Ocho Cinco. Palmer and company almost stole one from the defending Super Bowl champions Sunday, but collapsed and allowed a Giant drive similar to the one that ruined the Patriots perfect season. With top-notch players at skill positions, the striped ones must be lacking strength on the line of scrimmage. Head coach Marvin Lewis is on the hottest seat there is and surprisingly Cleveland’s Romeo Crennel is not far from the flames. Read the rest of this entry »

Breaking News: Lions Millen Fired

24 09 2008

by John Ryan

After a tenure that lasted a lot longer than it should have, Matt Millen has been fired from his post as president and chief executive with the Detroit Lions.  The move comes days after Bill Ford, Jr. decried for the firing and said he would have done it if he had the authority.  Although it’s still unclear whether he was fired or resigned, it is believed he has indeed been fired.  The Lions, 31-84 under Millen, have been resisting public outcry for Millen’s outcry for 4 seasons now, including an infamous 2003 season finale in which fans were to stage a boycott of the game. Apparently Sunday was the straw that broke the camels back in the eyes of the Lions brass.  No plans for a replacement have been discussed, but PCPSPORTS.com will monitor the situation and give updates throughout the day.

Week 3 – Things I think I now know…

Its easy to see Cutler is the man in Denver.

Its easy to see Cutler is the man in Denver.

By Mike Gill

Its another edition of things I now know and this week the picture gets a little more clear.  The haves and the have-nots are starting to separate themselves as we approach the quarter-pole.  Lets take a look at what I now know.

1. The Steelers are in trouble – Pittsburgh is beat up and the schedule isn’t getting any easier.  They will miss Willie Parker this week and I think I now know that the Steelers week one victory was a bit of a fraud.  Keep in mind, they struggled at the end of last season and I think they will again  with a touh schedule of games coming up.

2. St. Louis is fighting KC for the worst team in the state and the league – The Rams decided to make a QB switch, while the Chiefs have already used three QB’s.  Marc Bulger isnt the problem in St. Louis, the defense and O-Line are.  But you can’t replace 16 people, so they changed one.  KC is just a mess and I now know these are the worst two teams in the league – sorry Detroit your number three on that list.
