College Football: Duke’s Picks

27 08 2008

by Michael DeLuca

First full slate of Saturday games in college football is upon us and it’s time to get the ball rolling on The Duke’s picks. All picks are by the spread with my predictions in bold…

USC -19.5 Virginia - That’s right, I figured I’d start things off with a bang.  Will Virginia win, most likely not.  Can they cover, absolutely.  Player to watch: Left tackle Eugene Monroe is next in a long line of successful Cavaliers’ offensive linemen. Coach Al Groh says “He finished at a high level last year and it looks like he’s already beyond that level. He had an awesome summer and it’s looking right now like he can have a season comparable to any of those who preceded him.” Those that preceded him include D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Branden Albert, pretty lofty company.

Raiders: Kiffin Gone Shopping

27 08 2008

by Michael DeLuca

The Oakland Raiders are in the market for a backup fullback to starter Jusin Griffith.  The Raiders run often and coach Lane Kiffin had this to say, “I don’t know how this system could operate without another fullback.  I would hope by our next practice we would have a second fullback.”  Oakland toyed with the idea of moving Michael Bush to the position, but opted against it.  The following players are a couple options who were recently cut loose… Read the rest of this entry »

Eagles trim their roster to 67.

Moats was never really a factor since being drafted in the 3rd round.

Moats was never really a factor since being drafted in the 3rd round.

By Mike Gill

The Eagles waived the following players according to their official site: wide receiver Bam Childress, cornerbacks Therrian Fontenot and Nick Graham, wide receiver Jamal Jones, safety Marcus Paschal, offensive lineman Stefan Rodgers and linebacker Pago Togafau. Running back Ryan Moats. Fourteen more still have to be cut by 6 p.m.

PCPSports Take : No real surprises here, Graham and Paschal both could be brought back or picked up by another team.  I think Jones could have helped this team if he was healthy. Moats will be picked-up by someone soon.  Fourteen more guys need to be cut, should be interesting.

Who do you think will be some of the 14 guys cut?

Lucky Sevens – Phils Take Over First!

27 08 2008

by Michael DeLuca

Last year, the Mets managed to blow a seven-game division lead with just 17 remaining, allowing the Phillies to take the NL East pennant on the final day of the season.  Yesterday, the Mets blew a 7 run lead, for just the fourth time in franchise history, to allow the Philadelphia Phillies to retake sole possession of first place in the National League East.  Seems like seven may be a lucky number for the Fightin Phils.

Chris Coste’s RBI single in the 13th inning drove in Shane Victorino giving the Phillies the 8-7 victory on Tuesday night.  It was Coste’s first game winning hit…at any level.  Ryan Howard hit his National League leading 35th home-run of the season.

For the Mets, it was their 22nd blown save of the season!  Injured All-Star closer Billy Wagner has been sorely missed as the remaining committee has failed to close out games in his absence.

The team’s meet again tonight and will square off for a three game series on September 5th, 6th, and 7th.  It looks like the race could come down to the final day of the season once again.

What’s that? Don’t talk about — playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?

[I love Jim Mora. Thank you for that infamous tirade. Although I'm still waiting for Joe Girardi to do his Jim Mora imitation]

Seeing the Yankees behind Tampa Bay and Boston late in August is something that has never happened. Many people are dismissing the Yanks as having any chance of making the playoffs, and it’s not even September yet. Boston is not the best team in the division, and it’s no guarantee that they will finish ahead of NY- although as a non-Yanks fan, I’m hoping the Yanks just fade away so that every baseball fan will stop thinking NY has the slightest chance of sniffing the postseason. PCPrediction – Eagles Final Roster

Will McDougle make the team - that's the biggest roster question for the Eagles.

Will McDougle make the team - that's the biggest roster question.

By Mike Gill

By 6pm today, the Eagles must trim their roster down to 53 and I am sure there will be some surprises.  Take a look at the 53 men who will attempt to bring the city of Brotherly Love a championship.

Starters in bold

QB – (3) Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, AJ Feely – I really felt when Curtis went down that AJ Feely would be let go, however, some guys didnt step up in their final shot vs. the Jets.

RB – (3) Brian Westbrook, Corell Buckhalter, Lorenzo Booker – Simple.

FB – (1) – Jason Davis- Hunt got his chance and didn’t impress, Collins didn’t play vs. the Jets, I guess that means its Davis who gets the gig.  I think someone will be brought in from another team once the rosters are trimmed down today. Read the rest of this entry »

Eagles Roster – V 3.0

Something tells me that AJ and Heather are going to have alot of quality time.

Something tells me that AJ and Heather are going to have a lot of quality time.

By Mike Gill

Following their third preseason game, the 53-man roster is really taking shape and after tonight’s game with the Jets, it should be pretty clear.  Yes, Jobs were won, and some were lost and a key injury to Kevin Curtis really shakes some things up.  Here is my third look at the 53-man roster for the Eagles.  These are the guys I think will be on the team for week one when the Eagles host the Rams.  I will be back after the Jets game to update any changes I think need to be done. Wheels In Motion: Strahan’s Return!

25 08 2008

by Michael DeLuca

Yesterday, I began to speculate that Michael Strahan would rejoin the New York Giants following the season ending injury to Osi Umenyiora (see story here).  Today, the rumor begins to become reality as the wheels are now in motion for Strahan to rejoin the Super Bowl’s defending champions.  The New York Daily News, citing an unnamed source, says Strahan would return to the Giants if they were to offer him an $8 million contract for this 2008-2009 season.  As I had mentioned yesterday, Strahan’s retirement was originally believed to be a ploy to get more money out of the team (a venture he had been unsuccessful with by holding out in the previous season).  His desire for a new contract, coupled with his well paying new gig as a FOX analyst, surely means a return to the field would come along with a substantial pay raise.

Eagles – Defensive Ends May Be Weakness

24 08 2008

by Michael DeLuca

Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson loves to send his linebackers and defensive backs after the quarterback in a myriad of exotic blitzing schemes.  The success of these blitzing packages, however, has always been dependant on the talent and depth up front with the Eagles defensive line rotation.  In 2004, for example, the Eagles had Jevon Kearse, Hugh Douglas, Derrick Burgess, and N.D. Kalu wreaking havoc up front and striking fear into the hearts of opposing quarterbacks.  With the attention that had to be paid to blocking these pass rushing specialists up front, the linebackers and defensive backs were able to roam free when called on to attack the pigskin chucker.

While the defensive tackle position looks solid for the 2008-2009 season with Broderick Bunkley and Mike Patterson manning the middle, the Eagles may, for the first time in years, suffer from a lack of depth and talent when if comes to their defensive ends.  Trent Cole started all 16 games in 2007 and had 12.5 sacks along with 70 tackles and four forced fumbles.  He’s a stellar player, among the elite in the NFL, but take a look on the opposite side and The Birds have not even yet decided who the starting left end will be. NY Giants: Osi Out…Strahan In?

23 08 2008

by Michael DeLuca

In Saturday night’s game, New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora’s left knee locked up forcing him to leave the game in the second quarter. The following day, the New York Giants announced that Osi Umenyiora has suffered a torn MCL, which will require surgery, forcing Umenyiora miss the entire 2008 season. The surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, August 26th. During his college career at Troy State, Umenyiora required arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage damage to the same knee.
